The February swing heats up this week–at least in terms of quantity–with three ATP tournaments in Marseille, Delray Beach, and Buenos Aires. It marks a continuation of the European indoor stretch, the beginning of the North American outdoor hard-court season, and the start of the Golden Swing. Among the players in action are Daniil Medvedev, Hubert Hurkacz, Taylor Fritz, Alexander Zverev, and Holger Rune.
Here is a breakdown of this week’s tournaments.
Open 13
Where: Marseille, France
Surface: Indoor hard
Points: 250
Prize money: 767,545 Euros
Top seed: Daniil Medvedev
Defending champion: Ugo Humbert
Draw analysis: A struggling Medvedev took a late wild card into Marseille, desperate to pick up some momentum after losing in the Rotterdam second round to Mattia Bellucci. The 28-year-old Russian is just 2-2 so far this season with no wins over anyone ranked in the top 100. He won’t have an easy time getting back on track this week, as a stacked draw could pit him against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the quarterfinals and either Karen Khachanov or Sebastian Korda in the semis.
The bottom half is headlined by Hurkacz, Ugo Humbert, Stan Wawrinka, and an intriguing first-round battle between Lorenzo Sonego and Botic van de Zandschulp. Hurkacz reached the Rotterdam semis this past week before coming out on the short end of a high-quality match against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. The big-serving Pole is especially dangerous on indoor hard courts and has to be considered among the title favorites.
Hot: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, Lorenzo Sonego, Nuno Borges, Zizou Bergs
Cold: Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Bublik, Botic van de Zandschulp, Stan Wawrinka
Quarterfinal predictions: Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard over Daniil Medvedev, Karen Khachanov over Daniel Altmaier, Hubert Hurkacz over Nuno Borges, and Ugo Humbert over Lorenzo Sonego
Semifinals: Mpetshi Perricard over Medevedev and Hurkacz over Sonego
Final: Hurkacz over Mpetshi Perricard
Delray Beach Open
Where: Delray Beach, Florida
Surface: Hard
Points: 250
Prize money: $710,735
Top seed: Taylor Fritz
Defending champion: Taylor Fritz
Draw analysis: Tommy Paul, who had been scheduled to be the No. 2 seed, withdrew on Sunday due to a left-shoulder injury that has troubled him throughout the first month and a half of the season. That leaves Fritz as a considerable favorite to lift the trophy. If that happens, it would be a three-peat at this event for the top-seeded American. Fritz, who beat Paul in last year’s championship match, has a favorable draw in Delray Beach. He is potentially on course to meet either Reilly Opelka or Australian Open breakout performer Larner Tien in the semis.
With Paul out, the bottom half of the bracket is completely wide open. Among those in the mix are Alex Michelsen, Marcos Giron (who moved into Paul’s place in the draw), and Miomir Kecmanovic. Unseeded floaters to watch are Cameron Norrie, Aleksandar Vukuc, and Yoshihito Nishioka.
Hot: Taylor Fritz, Alex Michelsen, Learner Tien
Cold: Chris Eubanks, Michael Mmoh, Mackenzie McDonald
Quarterfinal predictions: Taylor Fritz over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, Learner Tien over Brandon Nakashima, Alex Michelsen over Cameron Norrie, and Aleksandar Vukic over Marcos Giron
Semifinals: Fritz over Tien and Michelsen over Vukic
Final: Fritz over Michelsen
Argentina Open
Where: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Surface: Clay
Points: 250
Prize money: $688,985
Top seed: Alexander Zverev
Defending champion: Facundo Diaz Acosta
Draw analysis: Two unseeded players at the extreme opposite ends of the career spectrum will be making headlines in Buenos Aires. In the top half of the draw, Diego Schwartzman is playing the final tournament of his career and doing so in front of the home fans in Argentina. Schwartzman has a winnable first-round match against a slumping Nicolas Jarry, after which the 32-year-old could meet Pedro Martinez in the last 16 and Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Zverev is on a collision course for the quarters with Francisco Cerundolo.
On the other side of the bracket, 18-year-old Brazilian Joao Fonseca is coming off a big Australian Open win over Andrey Rublev (followed by a second-round loss to Sonego). Fonseca, who has been on fire dating back to the 2024 NextGen ATP Finals, has a tough opener on his hands against Tomas Martin Etcheverry. The winner of that match will certainly have a great chance to reach the final if not even win the entire tournament. Rune could be factor, but he was dealing with an illness in Rotterdam and has now made a very long trip to Argentina.
Hot: Alexander Zverev, Joao Fonseca, Jaume Munar
Cold: Nicolas Jarry, Diego Schwartzman
Quarterfinal predictions: Alexander Zverev over Luciano Darderi, Lorenzo Musetti over Pedro Martinez, Facundo Diaz Acosta over Laslo Djere, and Tomas Martin Etcheverry over Mariano Navone
Semifinals: Zverev over Musetti and Diaz Acosta over Etcheverry
Final: Zverev over Diaz Acosta
who ya got?
