Nick Kyrgios upset familiar foe Stan Wawrinka 7-6(7), 7-6(2) in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Wednesday afternoon. In a match that did not feature a single service break, Kyrgios served at 71 percent and Wawrinka fired 11 aces. The 21-year-old Australian fought off four break points (all in the first set), while the fourth-ranked Swiss did not face a single break point.
Kyrgios gave back two mini-breaks in the initial tiebreaker, but he finally finished the job by winning a crucial return point at 8-7 when Wawrinka sent a backhand long. The world No. 21 benefited from some good fortune in the next ‘breaker, winning consecutive points with a shot off the line and then a net-cord winner to seize complete control.

Novak Djokovic joined Kyrgios in the last 16 by bouncing back from an opening loss in Monte-Carlo to beat Borna Coric 6-2, 6-4. Djokovic saved the only break point he faced before advancing in one hour and 18 minutes.
“I thought I was serving quite well in the practice sessions,” the world No. 1 commented. “Then the first set went well; the second, not so much. The first-serve percentage could have been higher and should be higher for the upcoming matches. But I’m satisfied with my game.”
