Djokovic denies Ferrer of Paris title defense

David Ferrer’s second straight appearance in the Paris final ends in a hard-fought but straight-set loss to Novak Djokovic. Both players will be right back in action on Tuesday in London.

Novak Djokovic captured his 40th ATP title and improved to 17-0 since the U.S. Open by beating David Ferrer 7-5, 7-5 in the final of the BNP Paribas Masters on Sunday afternoon. Djokovic needed one hour and 52 minutes to triumph for the second time in Paris.

Ferrer had defeated Jerzy Janowicz in last year’s final and his title defense got off to a good start. In fact, the 31-year-old Spaniard went up a break in each of the two sets and he served for both at 5-4. Djokovic, however, ended both sets by winning four games in a row.

“I am definitely playing the best tennis this year now,” said the second-ranked Serb. “I’m playing on a very high level and have lots of confidence in myself, in my game.”

“I think it was a really good match, really good rallies,” said Ferrer, who upset Rafael Nadal in Saturday’s semifinals. “I play maybe better than yesterday, and I lost. I am happy with my game. Now I want to relax and be with my team and tomorrow I travel to London for the last tournament of the season.”

The world No. 3 will kick off his World Tour Finals campaign on Tuesday with a rematch against Nadal. Djokovic is facing Roger Federer on Tuesday in a rematch of their Paris semifinal.
