Grigor Dimitrov triumphs in Stockholm by upsetting David Ferrer in three sets on Sunday. In Vienna, Tommy Haas wins a three-setter over Robin Haase.
If Stockholm Open: (7) Grigor Dimitrov d. (1) David Ferrer 2-6, 6-3, 6-4
Dimitrov captured the first of what are expected to be many ATP titles throughout his careers when be beat Ferrer in two hours and 10 minutes on Sunday in Stockholm. Playing in just his second final, the Bulgarian came out slow and won only two games in the first set. He got on track in the eighth game of the second set, with a break followed by a service hold to force a decider.
Ferrer had seized three breaks in the opener, but he could not solve the Dimitrov serve in sets two and three. The third-ranked Spaniard missed three break chances in the third, so one service donation of his own proved to be the difference. Dimitrov showed few nerves with the title on his racket at 5-4, content to play a number of long rallies. The last one at 40-30 ended on a netted forehand by Ferrer and secured the winner’s trophy for Dimitrov.
Erste Bank Open: (2) Tommy Haas d. Robin Haase 6-3, 4-6, 6-4
At the other end of the career spectrum, the 35-year-old Haas captured his 15th title in his 27th career final. The world No. 12 won this same event way back in 2001, and now he has triumphed again 12 years later. It wasn’t easy, though. Haas needed two hours and five minutes in addition to a third-set comeback to get the job done.
Haas’ forehand was a borderline disaster right from the start, but Haase could not capitalize on it until the second set. The Dutchman abused his opponent’s serve during the middle frame and his third break of the afternoon wrapped it up in style at 5-4. With momentum in hand, Haas pushed ahead 4-2 in the decider only to lose the last four games of the match. Haas earned breaks for 3-4 and 5-4 before serving it out for the championship.
