Dimitrov first to test positive ahead of Coric and Troicki

If you thought a lot could go wrong when players and fans alike made no secret about declining social distancing measures during recent Adria Tour stops in Belgrade, Serbia and Zadar, Croatia, you were exactly correct.

A lot has gone wrong, to the extent that three participants are positive for the coronavirus.

Grigor Dimitrov, who played in both Belgrade and Zadar, was the first to test positive. He got the news on Sunday, after which he posted an update on Instagram.

“I want to reach out and let my fans and friends know that I tested positive back in Monaco for Covid-19,” the world No. 19 wrote. “I am so sorry for any harm I might have caused. I am back home now and recovering…. I want to make sure anyone who has been in contact with me during these past days gets tested and takes the necessary precautions.”

Among those in contact with Dimitrov was Borna Coric, who beat the Bulgarian in Zadar this past weekend (Dimitrov promptly withdrew from the event due to feeling unwell). Not too surprisingly, Coric became the second player to test positive when his results came back on Monday.

“Hi everyone, I wanted to inform you all that I tested positive for Covid-19,” the Croatian wrote. “I want to make sure anyone who has been in contact with me during the last few days gets tested! I am really sorry for any harm I might have caused! I’m feeling well and don’t have any symptoms. Please stay safe and healthy! Lots of love to all!”

First a Bulgarian, then a Croat, and now a Serb. No, Novak Djokovic has not tested positive (he had not been tested at all upon returning home to Serbia, but he reportedly got a test on Monday night with results pending) but Viktor Troicki was also confirmed on Monday to have the coronavirus. His wife has it, as well.

Spreading of the disease among players who have been in close quarters comes as no surprise, and neither does the reaction to it. Count the always outspoken Nick Kyrgios among those who are not happy.

“Boneheaded decision to go ahead with the ‘exhibition,’ Kyrgios posted on Twitter. “Speedy recovery fellas, but that’s what happens when you disregard all protocols. This IS NOT A JOKE.”

Adria Tour participants Dominic Thiem, Alexander Zverev, and Marin Cilic have all tested negative.

  1. When Nick Kyrgios is lecturing you on not following protocols, you’ve gone badly off the rails.

No, I’m not surprised, I’d hoped it wouldn’t come to this, but you could kind of smell it coming, you know?

    • Exactly Cheryl. And the “boneheaded decision” falls squarely on the world number 1-Djoko. No surprises there.

      • What Cheryl said. And, yes, I blame ND, but the others aren’t lemmings, they did not have to follow him over the cliff!

And, it seems, the USA isn’t the only country with a leader willing to toss the population over the cliff if only he can get himself re-elected. Serbia played with their covid numbers so they could hold an election.

      • that has literally nothing to do with what’s going on augusta — the only thing that’s relevant right now is that he is correct about following protocols and people who are expected to be the role models for the rest of the tour are not following protocols.
