Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal will kick off their Cincinnati campaigns on Wednesday. They are set for respective second-round meetings with Mikhail Youzhny and Benjamin Becker.

Youzhny and Murray will be going head-to-head for the fourth time in their careers and for the second time this summer when they clash in round two of the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday. Murray has won all three of their previous encounters, including a 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-1 victory just a few weeks ago in the Wimbledon fourth round. The Scot is 7-1 lifetime in sets against Youzhny, having survived once in a third-set tiebreaker (2007 St. Petersburg).
Murray’s form is somewhat in question because his only matches since his triumph at the All-England Club have come in Montreal, where he beat Marcel Granollers then lost to Ernests Gulbis in straight sets. Youzhny denied a rematch by taking care of Gulbis 7-5, 6-3 in his Cincinnati opener on Tuesday. The 25th-ranked Russian is 27-17 for the season, which includes a recent clay-court title in Gstaad. Murray may not be back completely in peak form, but he is a two-time champion in Cincinnati and that should help him regain some confidence.

(Q) Benjamin Becker vs. (4) Rafael Nadal
Nadal and Becker will be squaring off for the second time in their careers and for the first time in more than five years when they do battle on Wednesday night. Their only previous meeting came at the 2008 Miami Masters, where Nadal cruised 7-5, 6-2. The third-ranked Spaniard is contesting his Cincinnati opener three days after triumphing at the Rogers Cup. That improved Nadal’s 2013 record to an incredible 48-3 with eight titles.
Becker is most famous for ending Andre Agassi’s career at the 2006 U.S. Open. The 32-year-old German has never done anything else particularly of note, but he has sustained a nice career for himself. Becker registers right at 100th in the world and he qualified for the main draws in both Montreal and now in Cincinnati. After beating Lukasz Kubot and Michael Russell over the weekend, he ousted fellow qualifier Pablo Andujar 6-1, 6-4 on Tuesday. Still, Becker is a mere 6-14 at the ATP level this season. While Cincinnati is far from Nadal’s favorite tournament and a quick turnaround won’t help, all other signs point to this being a straightforward opening match.

Gulbis will never change. He is not going to make a serious effort to play consistently well. He will never reach his potential. He is a spoiled, entitled brat who has squandered his considerable talent.
I didn’t see Murray, but the score says it all. I expected him to come out strong after getting bounced out of Montreal in his first match.

rafa is absolutely on the right track, ABSOLUTELY…he is returning serve from a little deeper position in the court but getting good strikes nonetheless…the balls move quicker here so rafa is probably getting used to that..

LOL…very very little hope for dimitrov and ricky if rafa plays like this..he’l beat anyone if he plays like that…rafa’s aggressive best is THE BEST among the big 4, its just that rafa is not that consistent on hard courts with this brand of tennis but for now he is just getting better and better !!!

Fine performance by Rafa. He was oozing confidence out there. The only shot I thought needs fine-tuning is his forehand on the run, DTL. That shot was floating long, needs to put a little more spin on it…..

Gosh, that performance was clinic!!!! i said to my mom that I was sure everyone would be saying the same thing about how confident and comfortable Rafa looked on stage tonite!!………and true to form I was right!! I must say, Rafa is playing so well, I have never seen him play so well on hc like this. He is painting the lines, his cc bh is a beaut!!!!!! Rafa, Rafa, Rafa………what a womderful era of tennis we’re in!!!!

I was thinking about luckystar tonight as I watched Rafa’s match. If she was watching, then she must be over the moon! He is cracking that cc backhand! I haven’t seen him hit that backhand this good in the last few years. He is creating that wicked angle and more speed. Also the dtl backhand is starting to show up.
Rafa seemed a bit impatient when some of his shots went long. But I think he is just adjusting to this court. Surprising that he says it’s playing slower than Montreal! His serving wasn’t great tonight, but again I think he was just getting his feet under him. Actually I thought that Becker played some decent tennis. But Rafa was just too good.
I am telling you, I get the chills watching Rafa now. His movement on the court is just outstanding, he is moving into the court to close out points with great volleys and just seems to be feeling it right now.

yes, luckystar MUST join us ! I am also having awesome feelings about rafa’s game ! Like you, I am really confident about that backhand…the backhand DTL is going to appear more frequently now (signs of an utmost confident rafa)…. have you also noticed the high quality of rafa’s backhand slice? even in montreal, his slice was so vicious ! normally, his slices have a tendency to float a little and sit up, he is consistently achieving good depth and bite off the court with it now ! wow what a complete package he is turning into while heading into USO….I just hope he just keeps doing things this way ! VAMOSSSS

Thanks for pointing out the backhand slice. You notice things that I don’t. Excellent observation! I remember in the past that this shot was not effective especially on hard courts. So he has worked on that shot, too! I see him slicing but there is something different about it. Is it the speed or the way he’s hitting it?
You are right that in the past Rafa’s slices would float up and sit up as an easy mark for his opponents. That’s why I didn’t like him using that shot. But it’s different now. I recorded the match and will go back and watch it again. I also want to check the speed on Rafa’s first and second serves.
BTW, I went to the atp website and Rafa’s first serves in for the match was only 52%! So I was right that he wasn’t getting enough of those in, but it didn’t hurt him against Becker. However, he won 91% of his first serves and 67% of his second serves. Those stats were even better than Fed’s serving stats in his first match. I think Rafa took something off his first serve when he wasn’t getting it in tonight. When I could see the scoreboard I saw that the speeds were slower. He started out in the 115 – 119 range. But then he dialed it back a little. I think he’s hitting his second serves faster now. I saw some in the 90’s. It’s hard to check the speed while you are watching the match.
Rafa will need to have his serve going for the match with Dimitrov. I wonder if Dimitrov will be ready for this Rafa. I am glad that Rafa played Cincy. He is looking good and the more matches, the better.
