Basel QF previews and predictions: Fils vs. Fritz, Vacherot vs. Rune

The Basel ATP 500 has been jam-packed with upsets, but Arthur Fils and Taylor Fritz emerged without a blemish to set up a quarterfinal showdown on Friday. Valentin Vacherot and Holger Rune are also taking the court.

(6) Taylor Fritz vs. (2) Arthur Fils

Fils and Fritz will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers and for the first time in more than two years when they clash in the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors Basel on Friday. Their only previous encounter came at the 2024 Tokyo ATP 500, where Fils prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

This marks a battle between two players who are hoping to finish the year with Nitto ATP Finals appearances. Fils is in great shape at No. 7 in the race, whereas Fritz is in desperation mode. The 13th-ranked American can only move into qualifying position (with two more weeks remaining on the calendar after this one) if he wins the Basel title. Fritz’s hopes are still alive following straight-set wins over Rinky Hijikata and Denis Shapovalov, while Fils battled past Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6(5), 7-5 and then outlasted Alex Michelsen 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) on Thursday. In great form and with his serve working extremely well on this indoor hard court, Fritz should be able to get past an opponent who really hasn’t done much since lifting the Cincinnati trophy in August.

Pick: Fritz in 2

Holger Rune vs. Valentin Vacherot

Rune is 12 months removed from a torn Achilles’, which he suffered at the Stockholm ATP 250 last October. The 23-year-old Dane finally returned finally returned in September and results have understandably been mixed. He won a pair of Davis Cup rubbers against Bulgaria, lost right away in Tokyo and Shanghai, and has survived a pair of third-set tiebreakers against Quentin Halys and Hubert Hurkacz so far in Basel.

Holger Rune

Up next for Rune on Friday is a second meeting with Vacherot, who won their only previous contest 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 during the Monegasque’s dramatic run to the 2025 Shanghai Masters title. Although Vacherot has not set the tour on fire quite the same way since that result, he has — when healthy — been solid for the most part in 2026. The world No. 31, who was a semifinalist in Tokyo earlier this month, battled through a final-set ‘breaker of his own on Thursday (d. Rafael Jodar 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(5)). With Rune still rusty, asking him to string together yet another win on the heels of back-to-back marathons may be too much.

Pick: Vacherot in 3
