Roger Federer will be back in action on Monday when he takes the Basel court against Adrian Mannarino. Federer is bidding for his sixth title at the event.
Federer has two more tournaments with which to make his bid for the World Tour Finals, the first of which comes right at home in the form of the Swiss Indoors Basel.
The seventh-ranked Swiss is returning the court for just the second time since the U.S. Open, where he was stunned by Tommy Robredo in the fourth round. Federer won his opening match at the Shanghai Masters over Andreas Seppi before falling to Gael Monfils. The 17-time Grand Slam champion is just 36-13 for what has been a disappointing season.
Up first for Federer on Monday is Mannarino, against whom he is 3-0 (2-0 on hard courts) and has never come close to losing a single set. They just squared off in the third round of the U.S. Open, with the former world No. 1 cruising 6-3, 6-0, 6-2. Mannarino is a modest 10-13 at the ATP level this year and coming off a first-round Moscow loss to Teymuraz Gabashvili.
The underdog likely won’t have the task of facing Federer at his very best, but the crowd favorite should still be way too tough at a tournament he has won five times.
Pick: Federer in 2 losing fewer than 8 games
