The Grandstand’s Ricky Dimon and Ben Rothenberg of the New York times have come of with nine prop bets for Day 8 at the Australian Open–nine prop bets on which they differ, to be more specific. Join the fun in the comments section with your own opinions!
1) Number of matches commentated by John Millman. Over/Under 3.5.
BEN: UNDER.
RICKY: OVER. Millman is a master commentator. With so few singles matches remaining, he should have plenty of time to work lost of matches.
2) Will Hyeon Chung’s post-match interview after playing Novak Djokovic be transcripted? YES/NO.
BEN: NO.
RICKY: YES. Chung should be able to keep it competitive enough to warrant an appearance in the main interview room.
3) Madison Keys number of aces vs. Djokovic number of aces +1.5
BEN: KEYS -1.5.
RICKY: DJOKOVIC +1.5. I need Chung to make this a relatively long match. If he does, Djokovic could come within one ace of Keys.
4) Simona Halep vs. Naomi Osaka straight up
BEN: OSAKA.
RICKY: HALEP. Common sense says Osaka, but destiny seems to be on Halep’s side at this tournament. After all, her first-round opponent was someone named Destanee.
5) Number of code violations issued in Tomas Berdych vs. Fabio Fognini: OVER/UNDER 1.5
BEN: UNDER.
RICKY: OVER. Fognini is always good for one, and I feel like one of these two characters will incite the other one into at least one more.
6) Number of total quarterfinal berths for Sam Groth at the Australian Open: OVER/UNDER 1.5
BEN: OVER.
RICKY: UNDER. He already has one (men’s doubles with Lleyton Hewitt). So this really comes down to: will he and Samantha Stosur beat Bruno Soares and Ekaterina Makarova? I will never pick Stosur to win any kind of Australian Open match.
7) Number of sets won by Tennys Sandgren against Dominic Thiem: OVER/UNDER 0.5
BEN: OVER.
RICKY: UNDER. He won’t come close.
8) Number of games won by Marton Fucsovic against Roger Federer: OVER/UNDER 9.5
BEN: UNDER.
RICKY: OVER. Fucsovics was Federer’s training partner in Switzerland a few offseasons ago. Federer will likely lose interest in the third set and donate a fair amount of games to his friendly foe.
9) Will Caroline Garcia’s post-match interview be transcripted? YES/NO
BEN: NO.
RICKY: YES. First match on Rod Laver Arena, and it should be a great one. Garcia will be in the main room.
whatcha got?
All I got is laughter!
Fun pro and con…why wouldn’t Chung have his interview transcripted???
