Acapulco R2 previews and predictions: Djokovic vs. Del Potro, Nadal vs. Lorenzi

Juan Martin Del Potro battled his way into a highly-anticipated second-round showdown with Novak Djokovic on Wednesday in Acapulco. Rafael Nadal is also aiming for a spot in the quarterfinals as he faces Palo Lorenzi.

(1) Novak Djokovic vs. Juan Martin Del Potro

It will be a rematch of last summer’s Rio Olympics first-round stunner–not to mention many more entertaining affairs between them–when Djokovic and Del Potro meet again in round two of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel on Wednesday. Del Potro upset Djokovic 7-6(4), 7-6(2) on his way to the silver medal, but the Argentine still trails the head-to-head series 11-4. The second-ranked Serb had won seven of their last eight encounters prior to his Rio setback, including a five-set thriller in the 2013 Wimbledon semifinals.

Del Potro’s wrist problems have prevented them from squaring off more than once since the start of the 2014 campaign, but he ensured another showdown against Djokovic by outlasting Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(1) on Tuesday night. Thus began the world No. 32’s second event of 2017, which was preceded by a semifinal showing in Delray Beach. Acapulco marks Djokovic’s third tournament this season and he is bidding for his second title. After lifting the winner’s trophy in Doha by beating Andy Murray in the final, Djokovic was stunned by Denis Istomin in the Australian Open second round. This week’s top seed got back in action with a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over Martin Klizan on Tuesday. Djokovic looks motivated and he will certainly be just that against Del Potro, who will not be helped by having needed two hours and 30 minutes to get past Tiafoe.

Pick: Djokovic in 2

Paolo Lorenzi vs. (2) Rafael Nadal

Nadal and Lorenzi will be going head-to-head for the fourth time in their careers when they battle for a spot in the Acapulco quarterfinals on Wednesday. All three of their previous encounters have gone Nadal’s away, and–somewhat interestingly–Lorenzi has been far more competitive on clay than on a hard court. Granted the red stuff is also the Italian’s favorite surface, but perhaps not to the same extent that Nadal prefers it. Whatever the case, Nadal prevailed in competitive contests in Rome (2011) and Buenos Aires (2016) before destroying Lorenzi 6-1, 6-1 this past fall at the Shanghai Masters.

The sixth-ranked Spaniard is off to an impressive start on hard courts this season, with three more tournaments–including this one in Acapulco–remaining before the clay-court swing. Nadal is 9-2 with a quarterfinal showing in Brisbane, a runner-up finish at the Australian Open, and a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Mischa Zverev on Tuesday night. Lorenzi earned another shot at the 14-time major champion by outlasting Yen-Hsun Lu 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in his opener. The world No. 38, who is now an even 7-7 this year, had been coming off consecutive first-round losses in Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Nothing suggests this will be anything other than a complete beatdown.

Pick: Nadal in 2 losing 5-7 games

      • RC!!!THAT’S THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEW I’VE EVER SEEN IN QUITE SOMETIME!!!!….And my reaction???……WOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!..LONG LIVE RC AND FARAH DIBA!!!YEAH!!!!

        • But why do I find myself cheering for Watson right now…LOL.
Just kidding…but it did cross my mind.

All these WTA Acapulco players I’m very neutral about. The only match result I got excited about was Ajla Tomljanovic beating Bouchard yesterday when Kyrgios was dutifully watching and cheering her on. And Ajla had been at his match v Sela. You probably know that Ajla T is Kyrgios’ GF.

What a life playing tennis in Acapulco and getting paid for it. sheesh, some people…

  1. MA,

I agree with you. I think Rafa should make short work of Lorenzi.

I also think that Novak/Delpo could go three. I would love to see Delpo beat Novak, but I think Novak will be ready.

    • Nny!!….Hope you’re ready to wooooohoooo! for rafa today!Yeah, let’s hope rafa will win easily…also hope his knee will not give him trouble and doubt…a slightest of injury can make him doubt back his physical ability and certainly will ruin all his hard work for the past 3,4 months…VAMOS RAFA!!!

As for Novak,i think different result will come out today, although if DelPo win..that’s okay as well..he certainly deserve it…Btw Nny…this is for u…http://cutelovequotesforher.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/good-evening-greetings.jpg
      hehehehe…

      • MA,

I did watch Rafa’s match! If you blinked, you missed it! But I had to charge my iPhone, so I couldn’t live blog.

Rafa came out sharp and dominated throughout the match. Lorenzi really had no answers.

Next Rafa gets Nishioka. I think that one will be an easy one, too. Rafa got a great draw!

I just hope the knee is okay. That bandage is much thicker than the one he had in his first match.

  2. Nice and easy one for Rafa! Great job, Champ! It’s not that Lorenzi didn’t try but nothing he did would do against this Rafa!

    Vamos!

  3. Vamos Rafa!

Novak takes 2nd set 6-4. Delpo broke him serving for the set at 5-3, then was broken himself. Now they’re on serve 2-2 in the 3rd. And I really need to go back to sleep. 🙁

I expected Djokvic to have a fairly easy match. DelPotro has been far from his best since starting the season late. But that forehand is cooking tonight. If he ever gets his backhand together…!

  4. Didn’t watch the match but how did Delpo lose three games in a row from 4-3 up in the third set and ended up losing the match? Was he running out of steam, or Djoko playing well to take the last three games? What a wasted chance for Delpo to have another win over Djoko!

    • I didn’t see the whole match, just the end of the 2nd set and parts of the 3rd. It was a corker but it was also middle of the night for me.

Both guys were playing very well in the 3rd set except that Delpo cannot come over his backhand and Djoko was really going after it. Djokovic remained calm – no histrionics. I do think Delpo was out of steam a bit – it’s hard to tell with him. He never looks really energetic. The post match meeting at the net was amicable. I got the feeling that Delpo was pleased with his play despite losing. He knows he’s not really “there” yet.

      • Ok thanks for the summary. I do think Delpo is just not up there with the big four, all along. He can have his occasional wins but that’s very much dependent of how the big four play; their best game > Delpo’s.

    • I watched the whole match and I think Delpo ran out of puff in the 3rd set. His shots were lame, some ending in the middle of the net. He is clearly not match fit. Throughout the match, Djoko was playing catch-up because Delpo was dominating. He could even have won it in straight sets.

Delpo had a long match against Tiafoe the day before, I think that did for him.

      • Talking about Tiafoe, that boy hit some excellent FHs, so hard and quick and so powerful, to me they’re even more lethal than Delpo’s! There’s one point in particular, when Delpo was hitting his FH so hard and quick, but Tiafoe just returned it with an even quicker FH to get a winner! His reflexes was just so good!

He will be scarily good, maybe better than Delpo in future, as he moves so quick around the court, something Delpo couldn’t do.

        • Well, you know what hard hitting forehands did to Delpo. That was Delpo’s undoing causing repetitive stress injury on his wrist.
