Who will win the French Open?

  1. Ricky I too see Zverev going out early. I can even imagine Ruud getting to the semis and beating Tsitsi. It could be RBA going to the semis though.
    Hope you’re right about Rafa.

  2. German players (men) never do well here. I think the last one to win was in the 1930s. Michael Stich was a finalist in 1996, that’s about it. Even Boris couldn’t make a final.

  3. For those in the bracket, I picked Fed for fun. I don’t play logically there, rather I choose what I would like to happen.
It’s not logical to pick against Nadal, although I believe this year his chances vs the field is less than 50%. That’s still great for 1 man vs all other. His path is not very easy and the 2nd half could bring a relatively fresh young competitor. The SF is a big factor. Can be a really gruelling one.
I think this edition will have many surprising results. I tend to believe Djoko will not make it to the SF.

      • Who would Nole lose to? Just about anybody, I reckon. He is struggling with his right arm, shaking the arm out after long rallies. Molcan is playing super well. Nole had to raise his level and make adjustments in the second set, Molcan I must say, reminds me of Klizan, and he’s got more moves than Klizan. If Nole is having trouble with the right arm, it also affects his serve. He was not able to win points with a strong first serve, at least by the second set.

Why the heck is Molcan not ranked higher? I was asking myself the same question about the 6’6″ German, Moraing, Nole’s first match opponent in Belgrade.

Andrej Martin was the only one this week to take a set off Nole. But I thought Nole was playing a bit easier in that match.

        A

        • I find it strange he is playing in the week before a slam.it’s very risky especially as, like rafa, he is no spring chicken 🐔 🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔🐔

      • I mean djoko Eugene

N yes fed won’t lose to cilic that too on clay. Maybe he will to berretini ..I’m hoping though he springs a surprise n beats djoko in qf

  4. Djokovic has no real challenge until the semis, unless Goffin wakes up from the dead or Federer unexpectedly finds form. However, Nadal vs the field is really Nadal vs the semifinalist and the finalist. Until then he has just enough opposition to get him properly fired up. Unless he gets injured it’s not likely that anyone can take more than a set from him.
There are too many unknowns in the other half of the draw. Tsitsipas looked good but on clay could not seal the deal against Rafa or Djokovic. I tend to think that we’ll get a surprise finalist from there.

    • So do I, the same eight. Not all that sure about Novak after watching him shake the numbness out of his right arm multiple times today. He was pushed by a very Klizan-like Molcan and needed a strong first serve. But Novak does have many ways of winning. It would have helped to have a strong first serve.

          • I watched all his matches this week. I was not seriously worried until today. His right arm has numbness and tingling when it is overused. Of course, he will need to overuse it at RG. I have reason to doubt him. But then I am about the only one here that would worry about him. No more comments about Nole from me, okay.

          • You should say what you want Elizabeth!
It’s true that I want him to lose to Rafa but he is my second fave player and the tour is way weaker if he gets injured…

          • Thank you for saying that the tour is weaker if he is injured and he is your second fave (I believe you)! And I may not want him to lose like you and the rest here and there (Tennis Channel) does. If I said what I wanted I would be called bad names I do not want to imagine!

Not mentioning him again is my attempt at being polite to the forum. 💐

      • Rc..I believed he said at trophy presentation today hope to get next trophy at RG..don’t u think that’s a statement

        What happ to his arm?

          • Sanju,
Shaking out the arm was only once in the second set. But the commercial breaks don’t help and with Tennis Channel, they also don’t show the players sitting down at all. This time they showed the trophy ceremony. Nice to see him in his home, happy and relaxed. But I didn’t understand a word of what either player said. Do you speak the language, Sanju?

Numbness in the arm is something I watch out for when Novak is playing. Molcon made it a tough second set, the score doesn’t reflect how tough Mr. Molcan fought or how impressive he was. I feel like Novak will struggle his way through at Roland Garros. It will be a good result if he makes the SF.

          • No I don’t spk that language. I heard on twitter he said that

Rc .I don’t see anyone before berretini troubling him .n frankly berretini is not mentally tough .musetti maybe if he reaches but max a set..he is surely reaching semis

          • You are sweet, Sanju. Thanks for the reply.

I doubt Musetti goes too far, let him prove me wrong and I will be happy! Berrettini could hit Nole off the court if his arm is not healthy.

  5. I gotta agree with the consensus: it’s looking like #21 for Nadal.

The most dangerous thing for him would’ve been to get Tsitsipas in his quarter. The Greek is the in-form challenger, he looks very promising on this surface. But that speed bump didn’t eventuate, and if they do meet in a final then an upset is less likely. Remember, a couple of years ago Thiem had better form than Tsitsipas does now (I would argue he was playing at a higher level) and he still couldn’t go five sets against Nadal. It’s fair to say that Rafa’s level may be slightly lower than back then, but I can’t spot any significant decline. The serve is still a little concerning, but I don’t think that alone will be enough to derail him. It’ll probably look better as the tournament goes on anyway.

I’m not totally discounting Djokovic, as that would be silly because the dynamics in these big three rivalries do change every once in a while. But right now Nadal is still comfortably the presumptive H2H favourite on clay. Novak would need to find some way of attacking the BH side which has hitherto eluded him; this seems unlikely.

As for the rest: Rublev or Karatsev are potential dangers, but they have weaknesses which can be exploited. I think Sinner is extremely promising but I don’t think he’s BO5 ready yet, I’d actually rank him less of a threat than those two. Thiem looks some way off his best form, and he’s not generally the kind of player who turns it around quickly. He needs more matches. Speaking of which – Federer is back but is still in the process of defrosting. If he makes it to the Berrettini match, he’ll have done well.

    • I agree about Rafa bring the overall favorite. I don’t see anyone stopping him before the semis. I agree that Sinner is not BO5 ready yet. Rublev is not going to be able to hang with Rafa in a BO5 match. Same with Karatsev. We have to remember the considerable advantage Rafa has in BO5 matches at RG.

I also agree that Thiem is not in his best form. I like the idea of Fed being in the process of defrosting. He only had one the one match in Geneva which he lost even though he was serving for the match. Getting to the fourth round would be a good result.

      • I agree that Rublev & Karatsev are highly unlikely to stick with Rafa over five sets, they could get hot and take a set but they’re not likely to keep up the required level.

No guarantees that Fed even beats Istomin, let alone Cilic, but I think he is capable. Very unlikely to get past Berrettini.

Forgot to mention: I agree with most of the picks, although I really don’t think RBA will get through his section. He may beat Zverev because RG isn’t Madrid, but he’s not likely to beat Ruud or Thiem here. I’m thinking it will be Ruud coming through, but this section is relatively open.

  6. this is a great opportunity for Thiem. He no longer has that pressure of winning his first slam, he should actually enjoy this tournament.

  7. I don’t know what is going on with Novak’s shoulder. I do know that he is continuing to play, so it seems that it can be managed. I am not sure why he thought he needed to okay in Belgrade in the week leading up to RG.

I never take Rafa playing Novak for granted, even at RG. It is always a battle. I am starting to think that there could be a surprise finalist from the bottom hair of the draw. I know that Tsitsipas appears to be the favorite, but you never know what can happen.

  8. Stupid autocorrect!

I am not sure why Novak thought he need to PLAY in Belgrade.

There could be a surprise finalist from the bottom HALF of the draw.

  9. Roger to play Monday.
Rafa and Nole play on Tuesday.
Anyone else seen the super cute footage of Rafa and Iga hitting together?😀

  10. Paul Mcnamee says this is the most important slam in 5- 10 years because Rafa could end up with 21.
Honestly I don’t know how Rafa withstands this endless pressure of expectation and scrutiny at Rg.
It’s really mindblowing and makes me incredibly nervous.
That’s what makes the Holy Trinity so great. That they can play for so long under this extreme pressure.

    • Bah, every year at RG always seems to be the “most important” for Rafa. If he didn’t fold last year he won’t this year!!! He can win or he can lose but the pressure won’t get to him.

      • I agree! Rafa has had to deal with pressure every year at RG as the overwhelming favorite. He knows how to handle it!

        Vamos Rafa!

  11. 4th round will be awesome….if your predictions pan out: Rublev ve Karatsev and RBA vs Zv….vamos Rafa!!!!

  12. Please God can we see the back of Ricky’s favourite player?!is it too much to ask for?
At least then we get to see some real matches..
