  1. Brisbane, Australia:

Elina Svitolina won easily over Monica Puig, 6-3, 6-3.
Garbine Muguruza won a battle with Samantha Stosur, 7-5, 6-7, 7-5.

Other Scores for Brisbane Round One:
Shelby Rogers (USA) d Eugenie Bouchard (CAN), 6-2, 2-6, 6-1
    Alizé Cornet (FRA) d [7] Elena Vesnina (RUS), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5)
    Daria Kasatkina (RUS) d Irina-Camelia Begu (ROU), 6-3, 6-3
Misaki Doi (JPN) d Ekaterina Makarova (RUS), 7-6 (1), 6-4
[3] Karolina Pliskova (CZE) d Yulia Putintseva (KAZ), 6-3, 6-1
Christina Mchale (USA) d Sara Errani (ITA), 6-3, 6-3

Karolina Pliskova hit twelve aces in her defeat of Yulia Putintseva!

  2. Auckland, New Zealand, Round One:
Only two main draw matches were able to finish due to rain interruptions.
Kurumi Nara (JPN) d [WC] Antonia Lottner (GER), 6-2, 6-2
Lucie Safarova (CZE) d Denisa Allertova (CZE), 6-1, 6-2
    Strong performance by Lucie Safarova!

It’s a packed schedule in Auckland — including both Williams’ sisters, Caroline Wozniacki, and Anastasiya Pavlyuchenkova, and the rained out matches from yesterday!

  3. Very frustratingly, due to circumstances beyond my control, I have not been able to watch any tennis. But I really like the happenings in the WTA so far this week!

Starting with Shenzhen, where the quarterfinals are set:
    Aga Radwanska vs Alison Riske
Anything of course can happen but Riske has yet to get a win over Aga. Aga is my pick.

(Simona Halep — Knocked has been knocked out! There went my tournament winner pick)

???? Camila Giorgi vs Qiang Wang
    Q. Wang is on my… ones to watch in 2017 list. Very happy about Camila getting a couple wins tho. This is a toss-up. Maybe I’d pick Qiang because it’s Shenzhen. Should be a good match and I’m hoping 2017 will be better for Giorgi than 2016.

    Johanna Konta vs Kristyna Pliskova
The Other Pliskova is ranked inside the top 100 and has a big game not unlike her famous sisters’ but my pick is Konta to the SF.

#52 Katerina Siniakova vs Nina Stojanovic
Who? Who is Stojanovic? She’s a 20 year old qualifier from Serbia. Maybe she’ll beat 20 year old budding Czech star Siniakova? This Stojanovic will make my ones to watch list if she wins maybe but until then – I’ll stay with Simona Halep killer, Siniakova, FTW.

  4. Brisbane Quarterfinals:
There’s been no big early round surprises in the Brisbane draw – unlike in Shenzhen and Auckland.

    Angelique Kerber vs Elina Svitolina
Hoping Angie shook off the rust in her last match – a three set affair over Ashleigh Barty, because as predicted, she meets Elina Svitolina. Elina dusted Monica Puig in her first round match but then needed three sets to take out Shelby Rogers. Remaining with my tournament pick, Kerber – but this should be close.

    Karolina Pliskova vs Roberta Vinci
It’s nice to see Vinci get a couple wins to start the new season. I was kind of writing her off but now I have a little hope for the talented Italian champ. There’s hope in 2017 for Roberta, but I’ll be surprised if she beats Karolina Pliskova. WTA #6 is hot, continues racking up aces, and maybe the only one hotter right now is Caroline Wozniacki (but she’s in Auckland). Karolina Pliskova FTW.

    Garbine Muguruza vs Svetlana Kuznetsova
Garbine, is lucky to be in the quarterfinal, from what I’ve read about her match vs Daria Kasatkina. Meanwhile, Svetlana has had no such struggles. Garbine is my bracket pick but Svetlana cruised past Louisa Chirico and rising Australian star, 16 year old, Destanee Aiava. I think Kuznetsova will win this one.

    Dominika Cibulkova vs Alize Cornet
Dominika the indomitable over tricky Alize. Alize will put up a fight but fighting through three sets is Cibby’s specialty!

  5. Auckland … It’s pretty stunning to me when Serena loses to Madison Brengle.

Auckland quarterfinals look interesting, to say the least.

    Jelena Ostapenko vs Madison Brengle
    Barbora Stycova vs Lauren Davis
    Caroline Wozniacki vs Julia Georges
…and possibly my favorite QF is Ana Konjuh vs Naomi Osaka. Although, I like that Ostapenko might be back to winning ways too.

Probably the only thing I got right about Auckland draw will be Caroline Wozniacki making the final. But I’m not predicting anything more about Auckland. I just wish I could watch!!

      • Thanks, AM!

Hoping it’s all part of a plan for Simona 😉
Radwanska, Kerber, Woz, Serena…..all for the seeds going out one way or another. I’m going to go pick next weeks’ brackets soon! later…

    • Elina Svitolina is going to be even more of a force in 2017! 😀

But did you her the Semifinal vs Pliskova? I couldn’t watch because the weather is still sucking the life out of the poor satellite dish. #apocalypticsnowstorm

  6. Just like DimDim, Genie has officially turned her career around…

RT @raviubha: Encouraging for Eugenie Bouchard: It’s the 1st time she’s beaten three top-30 players at a tourney since making the Wimbledon final in ’14.

    • It appears so, hawkie. And she’s only 22 years old. I’m not the fan I was of her in the beginning but I think she’s a fantastic athlete and (potentially) a GS champion and #1. I’m not going to say much like I did back in 2014 when on a Genie bandwagon — I’ll hold off, wait and see.

She certainly has had a great start to 2017 in Sydney. She cruised over Shuai Zhang, Dominika Cibulkova, and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, dropping no sets. This semifinal vs Konta is a huge test. Konta is on fire. Hoping for a good one.

      • Sydney Semifinals ?

#10 Johanna Konta vs #49 Eugenie Bouchard
Both have been equally impressive this week. Like Genie, Jo hasn’t dropped a set and her wins were over Rodionova, Gavrilova, and Kasatkina. Kasatkina was coming off the biggest win in her career over #1 Kerber.
Konta over Bouchard in three sets.

#3 Agnieszka Radwanska vs #19 Barbora Strycova, H2H 6-0 Radwanska – the last two of their matches in 2016 were highlight reel tennis all the way through three sets in each in Tokyo and at Rolland Garros. Love these two!
But Strycova was need to leave it all on the court yesterday to edge out Wozniaki in three exciting sets: 7-5, 7-6(6), 6-4. Poor Caroline. Both appeared drained.

Have not seen a Radwanska match yet in 2017. After a bye, she had a tough three set match second round over McHale then a straight set win over Duan. Strycova has to be tired, I’m guessing – so this won’t be highlight reel tennis this time and should be done in two sets, Radwanska over Strycova.

  7. A recap what happened going into Sydney and Hobart and have a look the favorites who dropped out.

    Dropping out of Sydney 470:
Belinda Bencic with a toenail problem.
Sloane Stephens with a left foot injury.

      • rc,

So is this going to be the right thread for info and updates related to the WTA? You brought up an issue with more than one forum for women’s tennis.

If this is the right place, then this is where I will check when I want the latest updates. I see that you have been busy with providing the latest!

        Thanks!

        • Nny,

Well you and Hawks influenced me…pardon my grammar, spelling and typing mistakes 🙁 Uhg….

Did you say you wanted in for the AO WTA bracket on Tournytopia like we had before?

          • Hey rc…I just saw your WTA Sydney bracket, how come you picked a Falconi over Aga?Oh!I changed my mind about to hire you to be my consultant for AO Challenge Bracket! That’s it!

          • LOL…..I’m laughing too hard to even defend myself 😀
She was picked for me when whoever it was I picked dropped out…

Thems the breaks…the chance you take. Just like you got Statham or whoever it was lol

  8. Yeah, yeah excuse, excuse…now, how come your Hobart Bracket also smeared beautifully with RED?I’ve never seen so much RED in my wholeeeeee life rc!…he he he he..oho oho ho ho…oh!excuse my rudeness my queen!

  9. Hobart Semifinals ?

#127 Elise Mertens (Belgium) vs #340 Jana Fett (Croatia)
Both made it all the way through qualifying rounds to get here: 21 year old Beligian, Elise Mertens and the 20 year old Croatian, Jana Fett. I know next to nothing about either one so I’ll post:
    http://www.wtatennis.com/head2head/player1/17409/player2/21894

#40 Monica Niculescu vs #61 Lesia Tsurenko
It’s a coin flip. They are both veteran WTA players, have met once, 2011 Indian Wells, and Niculescu won. Tsurenko defeated: LL Silvia Soler-Esinosa, Johanna Larrson, and Shelby Rogers. Niculescu defeated: Jelena Jankovic, Kirsten Flipkens, and Risa Ozaki. Niculescu has three WTA titles and Tsurenko has two. It’s a nice opportunity for either to play an inexperienced qualifier in the final and add another title to the resume 🙂

  10. Sydney Final 470

#3 Agnieszka Radwanska vs #10 Johanna Konta
Konta is 2016’s most improved player and I agree – even her serve motion is a little smoother and she’s a picture of confidence with a gorgeous backhand. Konta has sailed through her draw, including a straight set win over surging, Eugenie Bouchard in the semifinal yesterday. Radwanska defeated the always tricky Strycova yesterday in an entertaining semifinal; Aga also won Sydney in 2013 defeating Dominika Cibulkova.
Aga in three… but it’s close! Could go either way. My WTA bracket picking win % this week was at an all time low! (as Andy Mira, mentioned)

  11. wow just seen that jo beat aga in straights!! awesome win for her. the last 2 times she’s played aga she was beaten soundly.
i have been worrying for jo a bit with so many points to defend at the ao. hope this will give her a lot of confidence…

    • Hi amy 🙂
Jo said playing in Sydney was like playing a Fed Cup at home – she was born there apparently and had good crowd support. I’m watching the Sydney final replay right now. Jo is on fire. Her serve still has a little hitch but not much, it’s certainly consistent; and she’s aggressive; coming in more effectively than I remember: attacking, dictating, not giving an inch. She’s messed up my plan for Caro to make the Final because they’ll meet in the 3rd round. This Konta will win, is my guess …It’s a tough section to pick — Cibby’s in it that quarter too.

Aga was impressed. She said she couldn’t do anything – Jo’s level was too good. But Aga thought she wouldn’t keep it up — she would drop a little but, no. Genie Bouchard was starting to get her confidence up, playing well until she ran into Konta. Bouchard looked disappointed after that loss to Konta.

Then there’s Caroline Wozniacki she’s close to her best and I’ve felt since last fall, watching Woz’s great run to get back in the top 20, that she might even be my AO winner pick. Now I’m tempted to take her out to Konta. It feels wrong! but that’s how I think it goes. Konta over Woz at AO 3rd round. Her 2nd round match is vs powerful teenager Naomi Osaka – but I think Konta will have no problem.

Here’s what I’ve got for a rough draft if I keep Woz where I intended:

  12. AO WTA 2017
    First Quarter seeds:
Kerber (1), Vinci (15), Kasatkina (23), Begu (27). Dangerous unseeded: Vandeweghe, Bouchard, Doi, and Kristyna Pliskova has been playing well and inside the top 100 at #60. Victorija Golubic #58 is the Other Pliskova’s first match opponent and one to watch.

Angie Kerber is my pick to win her quarter.

  13. AO
    Second Quarter seeds:
    Muguruza (7), Suarez-Navarro (10), Zhang (20), Sevastova (32). Dangerous unseeded: Davis, Riske, McHale #mericans

Choosing Muguruza to make the quarter — but not sure about Garbine at all. There’s someone in that section will shine, but who? Shuai Zhang has point to defend from her brilliant run at AO 2016. Could be Zhang – could be an American gets hot. The seeds I’d rate – lukewarm to cold.

  14. AO Third Quarter seeds:
Halep (4), V.Williams (13), Bertens (19), Puig (29). Dangerous unseeded: Aussie teenage sensation, Aiava; Barty, Beck, Lepchenko, Duan, Tig
All the seeds have been under-performing – in some cases like Puig and Bertens it’s been months – since last summer. I’m going with Simona Halep but that’s a shaky pick. Venus hasn’t been healthy – so, also a shaky pick.

  15. Oh my goodness. I made a mess. Clanger alert. Somebody ring my bell please ???↩?
I’m looking at and picking 1/8 sections not Quarters!!! This is why I should be posting on the new forum with the edit feature! It’s too hard, otherwise.

    Quarterfinals
    1.Kerber over Muguruza

    2.Svitolina over Halep

3.Pliskova over Radwanska or vice versa. H2H is Radwanska 7-0. Both could have tough opponents…I’m only trying to guess which one will be in better shape by the time they meet…probably Pliskova because of her serve and power.

    4.Konta or Wozniacki over Serena

    Semifinals
    Kerber over Svitolina
Pliskova or Radwanska over Konta or Wozniacki

    Final
Kerber over Pliskova, Radwanska, Konta or Wozniacki
Essentially at this point I’m guessing Kerber will use her experience and hold up better than the rest. But it’s hard to decide about the ‘rest’. One of the ‘rest’ could dig deep and win AO! Love WTA…

It’s all down to flipping coins and rolling dice.

  16. interesting and good to read your thoughts rc!! regarding jo i read she hit 18 winners in the first set alone. against aga of all people who gets everything back! but i always worry with jo that she will play great one moment and then kind of seize up the next. so you had woz going to the final. wow. you really see either her or jo beating serena?? woz has had a bit of a block against serena and maybe it doesn’t help that they are friends.
pliskova seems like a big threat to me but probably is better on a faster court.
how is angie going to hold up defending her title? she’s never had that pressure or been in that situation before.i worry that the pressure may get to her.
this slam feels wide open to me.
