Serena Williams (vs. Genie Bouchard)

  1. Pfft, Sveta too good and gets the 1st set.

Bencic retired so Monica Puig is in the Sydney final.

In Hobart it’s Cibulkova v Bouchard and Cornet v Larsson semi’s
Very good 2016 start for Genie!

  2. Women’s draw Simona’s quarter
    http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/scores/draws/ws/r1s4.html
First match Cornet or Jovanovski. Lepchenko, or Tsurenko. Ivanovic or Keys. Then Venus, Karo Pliskova, Makarova quarterfinal. Not impossible?

Muguruza – Vika – Kerber quarter
    http://www.ausopen.com/en_AU/scores/draws/ws/r1s3.html

We already saw Vika win the title in Brisbane v Kerber. She’ll face Beligian, Alison Van Uytvanck first, then likely Elina Svitolina. Muguruza or Garcia match before the quarter. Kerber v Vika quarter-final.

    • Same old AO story for me – I fell asleep and first thing to do in the morning is check scores!
      Picks still in: 18
Petra Kvitova, Serena Williams, Monica Puig, Dasha Gavrilova, Aga Radwanska, Ana Konjuh, Maria Sharapova, Genie Bouchard, Carla Suarez-Navarro, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Belinda Bencic, Maria Sakkari, Roberta Vinci, Irina Falconi, Nicole Gibbs, Kiki Mladenovic, Anna-Lena Friedsam, Monica Niculescu.

      Picks that lost: 12
Sam Stosur, Caroline Wozniaki, Sloane Stephens, Sara Errani, Andrea Petkovic, Yanina Wickmayer, Oceane Dodin, Heather Watson, Anastasia Pavyluchenkova. Maria Duque-Marino, Evgeniya Rodina, Anna Schiedlova.

      Not terribly bad 😀

  3. I was surprised to see Woz lose in the first round. I didn’t make bracket picks for the women. Also Stosur is out. Sloane Stephens? That one is also unexpected.

I think there seem to be more upsets with the women in slams.

    • Oh hello, Nny! Nice to see you reading WTA thread.
Yeah, I like Woz way more than I used to. She’s trying to attack and improve her serve. But she may be settled into being top 20 and not as motivated? Not sure how motivated I’d be to go knock myself out on a miserably hot tennis court if I had over 20 million in the bank.

  4. Round 1 continues, Day 2 AO 2016
    WTA picking for beginners:
Venus Williams over Johanna Konta (***upset alert? could be interesting)
    Garbine Muguruza over Anett Kontaveit
Vika Azarenka over Alison Van Uytvanck
    Madison Keys over Zarina Diyas
    Jarmila Wolfe over Anastasiya Sevastova
    Simona Halep over Shuai Zheng
Karolina Pliskova over Kimberly Birrell AUS (never heard of her)
Ana Ivanovic over Tammi Patterson AUS (never heard of her)
    Jelena Jankovic over Polona Hercog
    Angelique Kerber over Misaki Doi
Ekaterina Makarova over Maddison Inglis AUS (never heard of her)
Sabine Lisicki over Petra Cetkovska (Cetkovska has a good shot at Sabine)
    Kristen Flipkens over Mirjana Lucic-Baroni
    Caroline Garcia over Barbora Strycova
    Alize Cornet over Bojana Jovanovski
Anna Beck over Priscilla Hon (AUS)
Alexandra Dulgheru over Storm Sanders (AUS)
Donna Vekic over Naomi Oskaka (what was I thinking?)
    Carina Witthoeft over Saisai Zheng
    Kiki Bertens over Laura Siegemund
Timea Bacsinszky over Katerina Siniakova (Timea – not sure if still injured)
    Bethanie Mattek-Sands ove Denise Allertova
    Mona Barthel over Vania King
    Coco Vanderwhege over Madison Brengle
    Elina Svitolina over Vicki Duval
    Danka Kovinic over Samantha Crawford

    Johanna Larrson over Irina-Camilia Begu
    Tatjana Maria over Olga Govortsova
    Lesia Tsurenko over Varvara Lepchenko
    Tsvetana Pironkova over Yaroslava Shvedova
    Lara Arruaberrena over Maryna Zanevska

  5. Anett Kontaveit is someone to watch. 20 yr old from Estonia, 5’9″, strong athletic player. Not at the level that her opponent Garbine Muguruza is at 22 yrs old, however. And Garbine looks to be in better shape than ever (it’s interesting to see how they turn out after the off-season). I’m regretting not taking Garbine deeper – already looking at her next round opponent, which will be either Croat, Lucic-Baroni or Belgian, Kristen Flipkins. oh my, Garbine takes the first set 6-0. Anett can do better than that, I’m sure of it — she made it to round of 16 US Open.

  6. Keys, Muguruza, Makarova, Flipkins, and Bacsinszky of my picks won. Williams could very well be going down — Konta is impressive. But I’m not all that surprised Jo is taking it to Venus. Konta serving for the match at 5-0. Venus isn’t going down without getting a game on the board and gets one break back – 1-5. Konta still in the driving seat. Yeah, as easy as peasy Venus holds to get 2 games. We’ll see if Konta can serve it out this time.

She did it – Jo Konta! Felt I should pick her…Congrats Jo Konta. Sad for V.

  7. Completely blindsided by Rafa falling in 5 to Nando. Did not see that coming.
Simona falling first round is bad, but I didn’t expect her to make the AO final. She has that lingering achilles problem…

Anticipated that Konta might win, watched most of the match…Venus going out
is ever a distinct possibility these days.

Vika wins 60 60. wow, poor Alison!

  8. The requirement to enjoying WTA is a sense of humor. Taking Simona Halep all the way to the semifinal hurts but not nearly as bad as it could have. Thankfully, I had her losing there to Vika Azarenka and Vika is still in!

    Final winner: Vika
    Runner-up: Serena
    Semi-final: Vika d Simona. Serena d Aganieszka
    Quarters:
    Serena d Masha
    Aga d Carla Suarez-Navarro
    Vika d Kerber
    Simona d Venus

This looks bad but it’s about usual for me. One complete quarter busted into pieces by Simona and Venus. Should have kept Ekaterina Makarova beating Venus 4th round. Karolina Pliskova was another thought in that section.

It’s tough to guess who will be in the best form and shape. In hindsight, I like Garbine Muguruza to go deep. To do that though she’ll need to beat Azarenka, though. And that’s the match-up I want!!

    • I actually think muguruza has good chance at that one. Everyone is saying Azarenka will win event which is understandable prediction but at same time I think garbine will surprise everyone and score an epic win over Vika then maybe go on to take the title if not the semis or final.

      • I like your ideas, Benny!
Vika and Garbine both have to win their next two matches to even get to each other. Fingers-crossed that nothing goes wrong.
Svetlana Kuznetsova could be dangerous in the top half.

        AO day 3 round 2
        Maria d Sasnovich
        Serena d Su-Wei Hsieh
        Aga d Genie
        Bencic d Babos
        CSN d Sakkari
        Kvitty d Dasha
        Kuznetsova d Bondarenko
        Vinci d Falconi
Putinsteva d Xinyun Han (don’t know Xinyun – ranked 162)
        Rybarikova d Davis
        Niculescu d Kulichova
AL Friedsam d Qiang Wang (don’t know Qiang – ranked 102)
        Mladenovic d Gibbs
        Gasparyan d Nara
Puig d Kristyna Pliskova (Carolina’s lower ranked twin sister)
        Kasatkina d Konjuh

  9. Bondarenko was on fire! But a surprising loss from last weekend’s Sydney title winner, Svetlana Kuznetsova.

There’s hope at last for Goffin. Appears he’s back from whatever came over him that 2nd set.

  10. AO 2016 Round Two, Day Four – Picks

Petra Kvitova is out – she fell to Mighty Dasha Gavrilova. Wow.
Dasha moves on to face rising star #28, Kiki Mladenovic. Popcorn match for me!

    Ana Ivanovic over Anastasija Sevastova
    Garbine Muguruza over Kristen Flipkens
    Karolina Pliskova over Julia Goerges
    Viktoria Azarenka over Danka Kovinic
    Madison Keys over Yaroslava Shvedova
    Angelique Kerber over Alexandra Dulgerhu
    Jelena Jankovic over Laura Siegemund
Elina Svitolina over Naomi Osaka (possibly an upset = Naomi wins)
Alize Cornet over Shuai Zheng (not at all sure – Zheng is the Halep killer. Could she be the new Li Na?)
    Barbora Strycova over Vania King

**Congrats to me. I picked 13/16 correctly yesterday. That’s improvement.
Timea Bacsinszky over Annika Beck (surprised Timea is stil in! thought she had an injury?)
    Ekatarina Makarova over Tatjana Maria
    Johanna Konta over Saisai Zheng
    Sabine Lisicki over Denisa Allertova
    Johanna Larrson over Madison Brengle
    Vavara Lepchenko over Lara Arruaberrena

  11. Day 7 AO, Round 4 Picks
    Rod Laver Arena day session
    Maria Sharapova v Belinda Bencic
    Bencic in 3 (I’m dreaming)
    Followed by
    Serena Williams v Margarita Gasparyan
Serena over Gasparyan in 2 easy

    Rod Laver Arena evening session
    Daria Gavrilova v Carla Suarez-Navarro
CSN probably in 3. But the home crow might give Dasha wings.

    Hisense Arena day session
    Agnieszka Radwanska v Anna-Lena Friedsam
Nervous for this one. Aga should win in 3 but…

  12. rc,

I finally got to see the replay of Ana Ivanovic and Madison Keyes, on the tennis channel! That was the one I wanted to stay up to see, but couldn’t make it.

That was something else! Seeing Madison fighting back hard to win that second set! At some point in the match, she was down 0-40 and just came through with some gutsy tennis to hold serve. I like her spunk!

That was a match that she could well have lost. It looked like she might be done early in the third set, but she just never quit.

I really enjoyed that match! Congratulations to Madison! So well done!

    • Madison is an exciting player. I would have picked her in that round but I’d followed Ana Ivanovic (watched her match in Sydney) leading up to AO and knew she was playing well. They are similar players, Madison and Ana. I wasn’t sure about Madison because she didn’t play any of those pre AO tournaments and had questions abour her form. That win should help her confidence.

Jesse Levine (former ATP player) is now coaching her and he says Madison K. hits so hard he had to have his elbow worked on, lol. She’s got such a huge serve and forehand. Ana’s coach is Nigel Sears – you may know about him? Andy Murray’s father-in law. He had to be taken to the hospital. Not sure if that affected Ana in the match.

Madison will have to play Halep killer, Shuai Zhang. I had a chance to watch Zhang’s win over Varvara Lepchenko and wow…she takes the ball very early, she moves great and is tall. Zhang has a cheering section at AO, too. Should be a great match-up – Zhang v Keys. I’m always looking for the nexr Li Na.

I think while typing Bencic got a break…not sure. Sharapova and Bencic are on TC right now!

  13. rc,

Okay, I will go watch Sharapova and Bencic. But I did just want to say that I do like Ivanovic. I remember her when she was #1 at such a young age and then her slide downwards. I really wanted to see her back. I do like her. But in this match I was rooting for Madison. If it was someone else, then I would probably be cheering for Ivanovic.

I did hear about Nigel Sears. That’s tough. It must be hard to play when your coach went to the hospital. I hope he is okay.

This is fun chatting with you about the women’s matches! 🙂

    • I know, the chatting… Thanks, Nny.

Don’t really have a preference between Ana and Madison Keys. Of course I’ll lean toward one or the other depending on which tournament and the draw. Only thought Ana would go farther.

Bencic I love. She’s great – no fear. Beat Serena in Toronto last summer. Shoot Maria broke back. Not a big Sharapova fan.
      Go Belinda!

      • I don’t know much about Bencic. But she’s got game. Maria is tough. I like her, but do not like the screaming on every shot. Vika does it, too. I just think it’s really annoying.

I did not know they were showing live tennis on the tennis channel. Tsonga and Nishi are playing now. They showed a split screen of Nishi winning the first set. I fear now that sticking with Tsonga may have been a mistake. I picked him in the bracket. At least I think I did. I haven’t been checking my picks.

        • Vika’s howl used to bother me. But I missed her so much when she was out injured that maybe I’m happy to hear it? I dunno.. just happy Vika’s back – go on and howl 🙂

        • you did… you picked Tsonga and so did Phoenix Rising.
          Hawk and I picked Kei.
I’m a big big Kei fan. Even hate seeing Nole beat him.

          • I thought that I did. Why I don’t know! Tsonga can be so inconsistent. I should have gone with Kei.

Do you know who Phoenix Rising is? One of us?

I am still watching the match. Bencic is ranked #12, so right outside the top ten. She’s got game but Maria has that look in her eye today.

I am glad that Vika is back, so I will give her permission to shriek and howl! She is so good for the game!

          • Dectective Hawk-eyes says Phoenix is Ricky. Whoever it is has a good bracket.

Only one point for a 1st round pick. I forget how many for a winner and finalist, semi finalist, ect but it’s a lot more important to get those picks right.

            Match point Maria…

          • Phoenix Rising is me. Who is winning?

Unfortunately I don’t even think that is my real bracket. My real one is in a different pool.

      • They didn’t get to the TB. Maria won broke and won 1st set 75

Belinda is losing, if the serve stats are anything to go on. Belinda needs more 1st serves in. She a better mover certainly and way more fun to watch than Maria…

  14. BB knows what to do, it’s just executing it. If she gets a first serve out wide, even if Maria returns it, Belinda can go the other direction and make Maria run…advantage Bencic. But too many errors is a problem.

No lack of fight on BB’s part.

  15. Day 8 AO, Round 4 (lower half of draw)

    Rod Laver Arena Day session
Angelique Kerber (7) v Annika Beck
Two Germans. Annika is 20 yrs. old, WTA #55, has made the main draw in all four GS, but never past round 2. She defeated all three opponents in easy sets, 2nd round was notably, 11th seed, Timea Bacsinszky. Annika is dangerous but I think her higher ranked, more experienced compatriot, Angelique Kerber makes it to the quarter-final. Kerber was my bracket pick to the QF and I’ll stay with her in 3 sets.

2nd match Rod Laver Arena Day Session:
Victoria Azarenka (14) v Barbora Strycova
Veteran Barbora Strycova has been playing the best tennis of her career the past two years. She’s energetic, plays a clever game of tennis, and will fight. Two time Australian Open Champion, Vika Azarenka could have her hands full but Vika is too good. Azarenka over Strycova in 2 (or 3 sets if Vika starts at all slow)

Rod Laver Arena Evening Session (after Murray v Tomic)
Madison Keys (15) v Shuai Zhang
Shuai Zheng knocked out #2 Simona Halep, Alize Cornet, and Vavara Lepchenko. Zhang is 5’10”, 26 or 27 years old, depending on what calendar you choose, from Tianjin, China, ranked #133, but not for long! Madison Keys will have her hands full but should have the confidence after a tough 3 set win over #20 Ana Ivanovic. Keys over Zheng in 3.

    Margaret Court Arena Day Session
Ekaterina Makarova (21) v Johanna Konta
Popcorn match! Don’t miss it if at all possible. Ekaterina and Johanna are on fire. Each should be higher ranked and will be by the end of the year, barring injury. I’ll pick Makarova but not at all sure about it!

If all goes to plan, six of my WTA bracket quarter-finalists will be correct for the first time. yesss…

    • rc,

      I like your picks.

I like Kerber for the win.

      Obviously Vika for the win.

I think Madison Keys should have confidence after her win over Ivanovic. She should get this win, but it may not be easy.

I am not that familiar with Ekaterina and Johanna. I hope to see that one and get to know them better.

      • Hi Nny, I fell asleep watching Kerber and Beck. The first set was taking forever. They kept trading breaks of serve. I’m not sure how Beck can be #55 with such a bad serve…sheesh. Her groundies off both wings are good enough to go toe to toe with Kerber and ROS good enough to break Kerber but if your serve is so slow and your opponent can break right back…well. Kerber won in 2.

Azarenka and Strycova are startin on ESPN2 now. Hope this one is better.
Makarova (RUS) and Konta (GBR) Is on late probably too late. And Keys v Zhang is on at 3 am. Oh my. no.

The match I’m really wanting to see is Milos v Stan – 9 pm my time. That one is doable.
