Dominic Thiem withdrew from the U.S. Open on Wednesday and also announced that his season is over because of the wrist injury he sustained earlier this summer.
“…Unfortunately I’ve had to withdraw from the U.S. Open and will miss the rest of the 2021 season,” the 27-year-old Austrian posted on Twitter. “I’m really disappointed not to be able to defend the title in New York but I haven’t recovered from the wrist injury I suffered back in June at the Mallorca Open.
“It has been a tough decision to make but I know this is what I have to do. I have a long career ahead of me and it’s important not to take risks and rush back — which I hope you understand.”
Thiem’s disappointing 2021 included unusual struggles even on his beloved clay, after which he accepted a wild card into a grass-court tournament in Mallorca for Wimbledon preparation. That is where he suffered the wrist injury and was forced to retired in a match against Adrian Mannarino. The world No. 6 has not played since then, also missing Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics.
Thiem would have been the defending champion in New York. He captured his first Grand Slam title in the bubble last summer, beating Alexander Zverev from two sets down in a dramatic final.
Sad news…hope he recovers soon
My favourite of the “next gen.” Wrist injuries are awful, Andy, JMDP, countless others. What a bummer 🙁
The USO may turn into a snooze fest with so many players missing, Novak will be salivating, and his fans will be rubbing their hands together with glee, no disrespect.
I disagree, there are many very interesting people in the draw, far from a “snoozefest” and it would be a very unwise player who underestimates Medvedev.
Im a Nole fan and Im not rubbing my hands with glee. Id be almost as happy for Medvedev or someone else to win . Im hope we’re not going to have an asterisk against the winner whoever it is.
As long as Djoker gets honestly beaten, rather than DQ’ed, no asterisk. Sigh, maybe I shouldn’t give Thiem an asterisk for 2020. Getting DQ’ed due to a temper tantrum is a part of who the Djoker is, after all.
True time for the new gen to step then, the proof of the pudding, and all that….
