Wawrinka, Thiem among 2024 U.S. Open wild cards

Earlier this week the USTA today announced its wild-card recipients for the upcoming U.S. Open. Among them are that three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka and 2020 U.S. Open winner Dominic Thiem.

Wawrinka, 39, lifted the trophy at Flushing Meadows in 2016. The Swiss has been ranked as high as No. 3 in the world and is currently ranked No. 141. He will be making his 72nd Grand Slam main-draw appearance, which marks the fifth most all time.

Thiem, 30, has been plagued by injuries almost ever since triumphing in New York four years ago. A wrist problem that was never completely solved convinced Thiem to announce his retirement from tennis. The Vienna tournament this fall is expected to be the site of his farewell. The Austrian has been ranked as high as No. 3 and is currently No. 211.

Americans Chris Eubanks, Zachary Svajda, Learner Tien, and Kalamazoo winner Matthew Forbes also have wild cards into the main draw along with reciprocal recipients Alexandre Muller of France and Tristan Schoolkate of Australia.

The USTA also announced the American men receiving wild cards into the U.S. Open qualifying tournament, which begins on Monday. They are Brandon Holt, Ethan Quinn, Nishesh Basavareddy, Kaylan Bigun, Eliot Spizzirri, Aidan Mayo, Bruno Kuzuhara, Michael Zheng, and Jack Kennedy.

The 2024 U.S. Open begins on August 26 and runs through September 8 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
