U.S. Open R1 preview and prediction: Shelton vs. Cachin

Ben Shelton

In the Holger Rune-Casper Ruud section of the U.S. Open draw, this is a great opportunity for almost anyone to reach the fourth round if not even the quarterfinals.

Pedro Cachin is no stranger to capitalizing on his chances in New York, as he reached the third round last year after getting to play world No. 347 Aljaz Bedene in round one and world No. 303 Brandon Holt in round two. Now the 66th-ranked has a fair amount of points to defend and he heads into this one with a 1-5 hard-court record for the season.

Shelton jumped on his opportunity at this year’s Australian Open, where he reached the quarters before falling to fellow American Tommy Paul. The 20-year-old has cooled off a bit since then, but he should still have a significant advantage on Monday playing at home in the United States and on a relatively fast hard court.

On clay Cachin would probably win; in this situation he stands little chance.

Pick: Shelton in 4
