Germany and Greece will do battle in the quarterfinals of the United Cup as Alexander Zverev takes on Greece’s top player, Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas will be doing double duty on Friday at the United Cup. He will be first up against Alexander Zverev in singles before he and countrywoman Maria Sakkari take the court in mixed doubles to try to earn Greece a spot in the semifinals against home team Australia.

The matchup against Germany’s Zverev has been favorable for the world No. 6. The two men have met frequently in their careers, with Tsitsipas winning in nine of their 13 encounters–although it should be noted that recently Zverev has fared a bit better than he did in their early meetings. Their most recent match went to the Greek at the end of last season at the Paris Masters.

Zverev has had slightly better preparation headed into Friday’s contest. The German has already played a pair of singles matches against Adrian Mannarino and Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego, while Tsitsipas eased into the new year with a routine win over Canadian Steven Diez.

This is likely to be an entertaining affair. Zverev, who is ranked No. 7 in the world, is a good hard-court player and he has fully come back from a season-ending injury that he sustained at the French Open in 2021. Expect this one to go the distance, with Tsitsipas just edging out Zverev.

Cheryl pick: Tsitsipas in 3

Ricky pick: Zverev in 3
