Fellow Americans John Isner and Jack Sock find themselves in an incredibly soft half of the U.S. Open draw with a chance to do serious damage. They will try to start their campaigns on a positive note against Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Jordan Thompson, respectively, on Monday.
Pierre-Hugues Herbert vs. (10) John Isner
Isner and Herbert will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they clash in round one of the U.S. Open on Monday afternoon. Their only previous meeting also came in a Grand Slam opener–at the 2014 French Open, where Isner prevailed 7-6(5), 7-6(4), 7-5. This time around it is the 6’10” American with home-court advantage, and he has always played his best tennis at home on hard courts. This summer has been no exception, as the 14th-ranked Isner captured a fourth Atlanta title and made a run to the Cincinnati semifinals.
Herbert is one of the best doubles player in the world and his singles ranking (64th) is also nothing to sneeze at, but he is a modest 9-14 at the ATP level in 2017. The Frenchman has played only three hard-court matches this summer, winning two for successful qualification in Montreal before losing to Jack Sock. Isner played the first men’s match on the new Grandstand last summer (outlasted Frances Tiafoe in five sets) and he is now headlining the first men’s match on the temporary Louis Armstrong Stadium. This one should not be as difficult.
Pick:Â Isner in 3

(13) Jack Sock vs. Jordan Thompson
Sock and Thompson will also be squaring off for the second time in their careers on Monday. The American will be seeking a measure of revenge for an absolutely disastrous Davis Cup loss during quarterfinal action earlier this season, when Thompson benefited from home-court advantage in Australia and pulled off a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4 upset. The world No. 73Â has since disappeared from the main tour (four wins since early March), but his success at the Challenger level has been consistent.
Not unlike Thompson, Sock has cooled off dramatically since a hotter start to the year. The world No. 16 slumped through the grass-court swing with physical problems and has struggled to get back on track. He has turned in just one productive tournament since reaching the Rome third round in May–a semifinal showing in Washington, D.C. Although Sock has endured plenty of bad luck over the years at Flushing Meadows, he ousted Marin Cilic en route to the second week last summer. He should not have much trouble getting his 2017 campaign off to a solid start.
Pick: Sock in 4

who ya got?
The Americans in 4 sets each.
Isner in 3, Sock in 4
Isner in 3
Hubert is a waste in singles. He plays well only in doubles. Played a lot in doubles this season (and made a lot of money…so not motivated to play more matches. Just wants to burn his money!lol) and is tired and washed out now!
In Jack Sock vs. Jordan Thompson
Not trusting Jack SOCK, ever, ever, ever….until I see him healthy and beating up top players like before.
If I bet Sock, I might be holding just a dirty SOCK in my hands, when I try to catch hold of sock after the match to ask for my money…as Sock runs away from me, throwing his shoes at me…and I am able to just get hold of his dirty linen/socks!Ha,ha,ha…
Jack Sock is not in form and not trustable. But he may win tho, with difficulty. But, it should never be difficult for a World No.16 to beat a world No. 73!
I am giving Thompson 1 or 2 sets. Stan calls it +2.5 sets, if I am right? I am still confused with this set betting!
Thompson beat an IN-FORM Jack Sock in 4 sets in 04/2017. Just imagine what will Thompson do to an OUT-OF-FORM Jack Sock???
Thompson can win the match again, but I am betting on Thompson to win atleast 1 or 2 sets!
Thompson is playing OK on hard. He is picking up form quickly again on hard.
Thompson has 4 solid win @Vancouver Challenger on Hard. Lost in the finals to Stebe due to 1) Tiredness maybe(playing 5 matches in 5 days) 2) Not able to handle the tough, awkward lefty serve & returns of Stebe. Just like that many find it difficult to handle Mischa also!
Sock is coming of 2 loses to Sugita and Ferrer. A World No.16 loses to Sugita in 2 sets, 5-7, 4-6?
Why can’t a fast charging (getting into form quickly) Thompson beat an out-of-form or Injured Sock (just playing for prestige in a home tournament or for covering points at USO)?
Sock has recently lost to Kevin Anderson and Kyle Edmund, players he should beat routinely.
No dirty Laundry or sock for me!lol Even if he manages to win rd1, in rd2 or 3 he will surely fall. He doesn’t have the stamina or endurance to go deep…whatever may be the reason.
Sock in four Isner in three
Same: Isner in 3. Sock in 4.
From a betting perspective I don’t see any value in the odds, so I skip these. Sock has problems with being consistent after injuries, but I believe Sock will win.
Isner should have no problems with Herbert.
No one should bet on Sock. I was this close to picking Thompson.
