Tsonga triumphs in Rotterdam, Dolgopolov upsets Nishikori for Buenos Aires titles

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga picked up one of the biggest titles of his career when he beat David Goffin in the Rotterdam final on Sunday. Alexandr Dolgopolov also found the winners’ circle, as he took down Kei Nishikori to finish as the last man standing in Buenos Aires.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga captured the 13th title of his career with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Goffin in the final of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Sunday afternoon. Tsonga fired 10 aces without double-faulting a single time while prevailing in one and 55 minutes.

“I’m really happy,” the 14th-ranked Frenchman said. “These titles come at the right moments. The last couple of months I put in a lot of effort to come back to this level. It’s a huge reward for me and it gives me new expectations for the rest of the year.

“I changed my serve and worked a lot on my backhand and my returns. I also changed my strings. There were many things to improve my game and do things better. Today it’s a reward and I will try to be better and better. In the second set, I had another mentality on court. I was more aggressive and it made the difference.”

“It was a great week in the end,” Goffin assured. “There was a lot of emotion this week and I won a lot of matches. I was a bit tired today. I started the final really well, but in the end Jo played better than me, especially in the third set. Of course I’m disappointed, but I played some good tennis and will be in the Top 10 on Monday.”

On the Golden Swing, Alexandr Dolgopolov pulled off a 7-6(4), 6-4 surprise over Kei Nishikori to lift the Argentina Open trophy. Dolgopolov won 84 percent of his first-serve points and never got broken, saving all three of the break points he faced.

“I think you can call it a perfect week,” said the Ukrainian, who secured just his third career ATP title and first since 2012. “I didn’t lose a set and beat Kei for the first time. The fans were really supporting me and I felt very welcome here.”

“I’m glad to be here in the final,” Nishikori added. “Unfortunately I lost today, but Alex played better than me. I didn’t play badly, so hopefully I can keep up this level.”
