The three best Nadal vs. Djokovic matches of all time

Nadal enters for the final

The rivalry between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal is world famous. The two all-time greats have met 52 times on the tennis court, with Djokovic emerging victorious 27 times and Nadal claiming victory on 25 occasions. It is the Serb who has been superior on hard courts, while clay is Nadal’s territory. They have been equally good on grass against each other.

They recently—and memorably—met in the 2018 Wimbledon semifinals. Although Djokovic triumphed, hardly anything could separate them over five sets. Nadal gave a fine account of himself, as well. The current world No. 1 went on to claim the Wimbledon title by defeating Kevin Anderson in the final.

But that did not make the cut on the following list of the three best matches between Nadal and Djokovic.

1- Australian Open final (2012)

This was one of the most thrilling rivalry matches, lasting five hours and 53 minutes for what remains the longest Grand Slam final in history.

In the first set Djokovic looked a little unfocused, losing it 7-5. However, the Serb came back strong in the game and won the next two sets—especially dominating the third.

It may have looked like Djokovic would roll from there, but Nadal was not going to give up. The Spaniard managed to win the fourth set, setting the stage for a decider that witnessed greatness between the two. Nadal was briefly up a break but Djokovic fought back to triumph 7-5.

2- Madrid Masters semifinals (2009)

Their 2009 Madrid Masters semifinal resulted in a long and thrilling contest. The match lasted for four hours and three minutes, with both players giving their absolute best to get the clay-court victory. Nadal was and still is the undisputed King of Clay, but this presented Djokovic with a real opportunity.

The Serb won the first set easily. He was close to win the second set, too, but Nadal fought very hard and secured it 7-6. In the third, Djokovic started very well found himself leading 3-1. However, Nadal managed to survive it 7-6 and record his fifth straight win over Djokovic. Clearly fatigued, the Spaniard could not continue his winning form and lost to Roger Federer in the final in straight sets.

3- Stella Artois Championship (2008)

The year 2008 proved to be a good year for Nadal, and that is an understatement. He won Wimbledon in an epic final against Federer—considered as one of the greatest matches in the tennis history. Nadal also outclassed Djokovic in the 2008 Stella Artois championship just a few weeks earlier.

Although Nadal defeated Djokovic in straight sets, the match was not at all one-sided. Djokovic also played very well despite succumbing 7-6, 7-5.

  1. Bizarre choices! RG 2013 should definitely be there plus the wimby semi this year. All 3 of their slam five setters would arguably be the top 3.

    • Actually if you ever wanted to argue the case for slam five setters then pointing to the rafole matches would make the case for you.
Long live rafole and fedal! Arguably the 2 greatest rivalries of all time( puts cat 🐱 among pigeons)

      • Yes! Actually i would rather watch that than AO which had 2 dull sets so that can go in. Madrid was also a window into the future regarding what Nole was capable of even on clay….iconic match..
