Lorenzo Sonego saved four match points to beat Ugo Humbert 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in round one of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Tuesday.
Humbert served for the match at 5-4 in the third set and had double-match point at 40-15. However, Sonego ended up breaking after fighting off four match points–including one with an incredible on-the-run, cross-court forehand pass. The Italian then took the next two games to prevail after two hours and 59 minutes.
Humbert also had Sonego on the ropes in the second set. The Frenchman had two break points at 5-5 but could not convert. He then got broken at love to send the match into a decider.
Sonego will meet Daniil Medvedev in the third round on Wednesday.
