Six tennis players for whom the pressure is on in 2021

With the uncertainty facing sporting events worldwide, including tennis in 2020 and again in 2021, this year hopes to be a success for both players and fans alike. The Australian Open is two weeks away and it is set to be a thrilling start to the season, giving a glimpse of what to expect. As with any other tennis season, some perennial favorites are expected to dominate the game while there could also be some newcomers to shake things up. If you are a tennis fan and fancy your chances for your favorite stars, you might consider heading over to comeon betting for a wide range of tournaments to bet on.

Here are some of the players who could really use a strong year on the court in 2021.

Bianca Andreescu

After being crowned champion of Indian Wells, the Rogers Cup, and the U.S. Open in 2019,  Andreescu did not take to the court a single time in 2020. The 20-year-old Canadian suffered a knee injury, so the last match she played was in October of 2019 at the WTA Finals. She was slated to return in March of last season, but the coronavirus pandemic obviously disrupted her plans. Andreescu opted against returning in August when tennis restarted, instead choosing for rest and recovery in hopes of coming back stronger in 2021. She is looking to continue where she left in 2019 when the Australian Open starts.

Matteo Berrettini

Berrettini had an impressive run in 2019, reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Open and securing a spot in the Nitto ATP Finals. However, the 24-year-old Italian struggled to find form after the restart. He is hoping he can return to winning ways this season.

Madison Keys

Keys is ranked 16th on the WTA Tour and has five singles titles under her belt. She was also a finalist at the Aussie Open in 2015 and reached the third round in 2020. The 25-year-old American was also runner-up at the 2017 U.S. Open. Keys will be hoping to have a breakthrough year in 2021, perhaps with her first slam triumph.

Roger Federer

Federer is arguably the best tennis player in history. However, the 20-time major champion has not played since his 2020 Australian Open semifinal loss to Novak Djokovic. An right-knee injury has kept Federer on the sidelines since that point in time. At 39 years old, Federer hopes he still has something to offer to the tennis world before calling it quits.

Coco Gauff

At only 16 years old, Gauff is among the new crop of players looking to conquer the world of tennis. The American is already well known for stunning Venus Williams at Wimbledon in 2019. At just 15, she became the youngest player since 1996 to win a Grand Slam match. Although Gauff did not hit the heights expected of her after the restart last summer, her potential cannot be underestimated. This year may be even more of a breakthrough for her than 2019.

Serena Williams

Williams is 39 years old and has been stuck on 23 Grand Slam singles titles for a surprisingly long time, but it is never wise to write her off. The American will be looking to match and even surpass the record held by Margaret Court of 24 major victories.

  1. Fed probably made a real honest assessment and knew he wasnt ready. if he was really ready to play his best he wouldve been here rain, hail or shine.

Most likely read some comments online, maybe in this forum which made him thin kand realise that he wasnt going to make it past the quarters of the AO.

I think he still has a chance of doing well in hard court masters events and at Wimbledon for another 2 years.

      • When you have that natural classic craft/skill you can compete for a very long time at a high level. That’s why ex-players in their 50s, 60s and even 70s can outclass much younger opponents that don’t understand the craft as well.

    • Correct, the list goes on. There are more players under pressure right now due to the stage they’re at in the careers, an ageing tour and/or the disruption caused by COVID than you could poke a stick at. It really is unprecedented in the history of professional tennis which makes it kind of interesting from a spectator’s perspective.

  2. Pressure’s also on for players like Nick Kyrgios, Bernard Tomic, Dustin Brown, Ernests Gulbis, Jerzy Janowicz. I think 2021 is where we really see at least two of them making some sort of an impact.

  3. Fed DOES have something left in the tank….maybe not another Major, bur some quarters and maybe a Semi or two. Thiem and Medvedev should continue to shine….Rublev too!!!

  4. For me Medvedev and Thiem are under the most pressure.

Thiem will be 28 this year and should be emerging as the best player in the game, but his window is quite small to be an all time great.

Medvedev is going to be 25 and is expected to win slams now, but only realistically has two chances a year. Every missed hard court slam is big for him; and really adds to the pressure.

I really don’t think Federer is putting any pressure on himself.
