It was nothing short of a history day for Jannik Sinner.

With Italy trailing Serbia 1-0 in the Davis Cup semifinals, Sinner came back from three match points down–elimination points down, in fact–to stun world No. 1 Novak Djokovic and then won the ensuing doubles rubber for an improbable Italian triumph on Saturday afternoon in Malaga, Spain. The 22-year-old overcame Djokovic 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 before teaming up with Lorenzo Sonego to defeat Djokovic and Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 6-4.

Italy will face Australia for the title on Sunday.

Sinner saves triple match point to beat Djokovic

Djokovic had Serbia one point from the final with Sinner serving at 4-5, 0-40 in the third set of the second singles rubber. Shockingly, however, the 36-year-old could not get across the finish line. Sinner held from triple match point down and never looked back, breaking Djokovic at 5-5 and then holding at 6-5 to clinch an incredible victory after two hours and 33 minutes.

Sinner, Sonego take the doubles decider

With momentum in hand, it was full steam ahead for Italy in the doubles rubber. Although the 6-3, 6-4 scoreline was routine, it was an amazing match–especially the second set–that lasted one hour and 36 minutes.

The decisive moments came during a two-game stretch midway through the second set. Serving at 2-3, Sinner again dug out of a 0-40 hole and managed to hold for 3-3. In the next game, the Italians broke Kecmanovic in a multi-deuce affair.

Serbia earned one break chance at 5-4 to get back on serve, but Sinner again came up big when it mattered most and delivered one last crucial service hold to clinch the tie.

  1. just read the match report. Absolutely fantastic from Sinner, such mental toughness. This’ll give him immense confidence going forwards. Grand news for tennis.
C’mon Carlos, you need to step up too.

  2. I wouldn’t read too much into it, Nole came from just winning Turin, smashing two future best players in SF and F.
He was emotionally running on fumes, plus problem with drug testing when they came to test him 1 (ONE) hour before the match with that South Africa-New Zeland-UK citizen, while he was doing his routine preparation for the match, that never ever happened before, he told them bluntly “what’s is wrong to test me after the match, I am not going to run away”, ATP subcontracted drug testing to private companies.
Then it was political tensions banning and removing songs that Serbian players sung from official website.
Nole shouldn’t have played DC, there is no significance in it and didn’t need it, but he is doing favour to Troicki and he is making big mistake, he’ll play Unated Cup for Serbia too, just to support his mate Troicki as a Captain instead playing Adelaide.

He is repeating Japan Olympic Games mistake, well, nobody is perfect, I just hope it’s not going to cost him going forward for AO.
