Jannik Sinner will take the court as the No. 1 player in the world when he headlines the Terra Wortmann Open in Halle, Germany this coming week.

Sinner claimed the top spot in the rankings for the first time at the conclusion of the French Open, where he lost to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals. Novak Djokovic, who had been No. 1, withdrew prior to the quarterfinals because of a knee injury and was therefore unable to defending his 2,000 points from last year’s title at Roland Garros.

“Of course I want to be in the fight for the title,” said Sinner, who arrived in Halle earlier this week. “But the competition is very, very strong.”

That is an understatement, as the 22-year-old Italian is joined in a loaded field by French Open runner-up Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Hubert Hurkacz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and defending champion Alexander Bublik.
