Shelton, Tiafoe headline start of hard-court swing in Atlanta

Ben Shelton

A 14-year run comes to an end with the final installment of the Atlanta Open. The ATP 250 tournament will once again kick off the U.S. summer hard-court swing next week.

Even though the event is going head-to-head with the Paris Olympics (tennis begins next weekend), it should be grand finale in Atlanta with a strong field of 28 players. The draw is headlined by Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and Denis Shapovalov. No. 2 seed Adrian Mannarino, No. 4 Jordan Thompson, and No. 5 Miomir Kecmanovic are also taking their talents to Atlanta.

The top half of the bracket is especially strong, home to Shelton, Davidovich Fokina, Shapovalov, Thompson, and Borna Coric. Intriguing first-round showdowns include Davidovich Fokina vs. Arthur Cazaux, Shapovalov vs. David Goffin, and Coric vs. Thanasi Kokkinakis. Shelton vs. Shapovalov is a potential quarterfinal pairing and would be a rematch of the recent Wimbledon third round, won by the American in five sets.

On the other side of the draw sits Tiafoe, who picked up some much-needed momentum by pushing eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz to five sets at the All-England Club. Tiafoe could open with Aslan Karatsev in round two before possibly running into Brandon Nakashima in the quarters. As for a struggling Mannarino, he will likely kick off his week against 2023 Atlanta runner-up Aleksandar Vukic.
