Jerry Shang became the second-ever Chinese man to win an ATP title–and the first to do so on home soil–when he took down top seed Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(4), 6-1 in the Chengdu Open final on Tuesday evening.

Shang controlled the match most of the way, with his only hiccup coming while trying to serve out the first set at 6-5. The 19-year-old recovered quickly in the ensuing tiebreaker, and after winning it he rolled through set two with ease.

The left-hander has now won 24 matches on the main tour in 2024, having come into the season with just four. He will climb to at least 51st in the next ATP rankings.

“First of all, congratulations to [Lorenzo],” Shang said during the trophy ceremony. “I know you have higher standards, but congrats on a great week. You’re a huge inspiration if you didn’t know to a lot of Chinese kids, including myself, to [have been] performing so well at a young age. I really look up to you.”

“To my team, this week has been a lot of up-and-down–especially (thanks) to my coach; we’ve been through so [much] together…. (Thanks) to my family, too, that you guys are here. I love you. Let’s continue to do more in the season.”

Shang will try to keep his amazing year going at the upcoming ATP 500 in Beijing, where he will face compatriot Bu Yunchaokete in round one. Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are the top seeds.
