Jannik Sinner will take on hometown favorite Tallon Griekspoor in a semifinal showdown on Saturday in Rotterdam.

Jannik Sinner, the young Italian star, has had a fantastic tournament so far. The ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament draw was so impressive that the world No. 14 wasn’t even ranked high enough last week to nab one of the eight seeds. Nevertheless, Sinner battled his way into the semifinals. His most notable victory this week so far is over top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round. He also notched an impressive defeat of Stan Wawrinka in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Wild-card entrant Tallon Griekspoor, the world No. 61, had a far less complicated path to the semis in terms of opposition quality. Griekspoor ran into Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the second round, but the No. 8 seed is still working to find his form after coming back from a serious ankle injury he sustained at the French Open in 2022. Otherwise, Griekspoor benefited from a few upsets–including fellow Dutchman Gijs Brouwer’s shock win over No. 4 seed Holger Rune in the second round.

Given Sinner’s current form, including his first title of the year last week in Montpellier, it’s hard to imagine a win for Griekspoor on Saturday. Even with support from the home crowd, the local hope doesn’t have anywhere near the consistent game that Sinner does. Look for the Italian to advance to the final.
