Queen’s Club QF previews and predictions: Alcaraz vs. Dimitrov, Rune vs. Musetti

Alcaraz

Top seed Carlos Alcaraz will battle an in-form Grigor Dimitrov in the Queen’s Club quarterfinals during an action-packed day in London. Rising Danish star Holger Rune will take on Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

(1) Carlos Alcaraz vs. (Q) Grigor Dimitrov

World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz had a tricky start to his grass-court season. Arthur Rinderknech of France pushed the Spaniard to a deciding-set tiebreaker in round one of the Cinch Championships. Alcaraz had no such issues in his second-round match, which he breezed through 6-2, 6-3 against Jiri Lehecka on Thursday.

Grigor Dimitrov is ranked 26th in the world. The Bulgarian doesn’t have any titles in 2023 yet, but he did make the final in Geneva earlier in the spring clay swing. Dimitrov posted a pair of solid, straight-set wins over Emil Ruusuvuori and Francisco Cerundolo to earn his spot in Friday’s quarterfinals. Dimitrov, who occasionally experiences dips in form, has been playing well for the past few months.

Alcaraz holds a 2-0 head-to-head record over Dimitrov. And while the veteran is more experienced on grass courts, this one should go Alcaraz’s way.

(2) Holger Rune vs. (6) Lorenzo Musetti

Lorenzo Musetti has had a career resurgence since he made the quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo in April. The world No. 16 even managed to get the first two grass-court wins of his career in Stuttgart heading into Queen’s Club. It hasn’t taken the Italian long to find a grass-court game that works for him, as he duplicated the result this week.

Musetti

World No. 6 Holger Rune has positioned himself firmly in the ATP top 10. The Danish star regularly earns his way into the business end of most tournaments he enters. His grass-court credentials are less than impressive; he had never won a match on grass prior to this week. But his all-court game and general talent has been enough at Queen’s Club to earn a quarterfinal spot in his tournament debut this week.

This will be the first meeting between the two men. As they are both largely grass-court novices, this one will likely be decided based on recent form.

Cheryl pick: Rune in 2

Ricky pick: Rune in 2

  1. Rune is a beast. Now he’s beginning to play great on grass aswell. My prediction is it wont take long before we see him in top 3

  2. RBA vs. Medvedev — this is my favorite match of 2023.

Battle of the chess players. RBA came out having Meds number. And
Medvedev knows it and has been enjoying his opponents’ play most of the time. Medvedev is about to lose, but his face has no stress. RBA is simply the better player today, great tennis guys! 😀
