Rotterdam preview and picks: Davydenko vs. Dimitrov, Baghdatis vs. Paire

Nikolay Davydenko vs. Grigor Dimitrov

At very different points in their respective careers, Davydenko and Dimitrov will be colliding for the first time in round two of the ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament on Wednesday night. Davydenko opened with a routine win over a slumping Florian Mayer, while Dimitrov kicked off his campaign with an impressive three-set victory over Bernard Tomic.

Both men are predictably unpredictable. They began the year in outstanding form (Davydenko finished runner-up in Doha and Dimitrov reached the Brisbane final) but neither one has done anything since. With two such mercurial players, no result would be a surprise for this showdown.

Pick: Dimitrov in 3

Marcos Baghdatis vs. Benoit Paire

It’s way too early to start thinking seriously about French Open seeding, but Baghdatis (ranked 36th in the world) remains in contention for a seed at slams and Paire (ranked 38th) is making a serious push for the same. Paire is playing some of the best tennis of his career and he is coming off a runner-up finish in Montpellier, where he ultimately fell to Richard Gasquet. The 23-year-old Frenchman is a solid 7-4 for the season.

Baghdatis is a respectable 6-3 for his 2013 campaign and he has not lost in the first round in any of three tournaments. The veteran Cypriot, a semifinalist in Sydney, beat Tobias Kamke last week in Zagreb before losing to Blaz Kavcic. The indoor hard court should be slightly more conducive to Baghdatis’ game and he will also be more well-rested because Paire had a longer week in Montpellier. As such, a slight edge goes to Baghdatis in their first-ever encounter.

Pick: Baghdatis in 3

  1. Howdy just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Ie.

I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let you know.

The style and design look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon.

    Cheers
