Juan Martin Del Potro and Roger Federer will be facing each other for the second time in six days when they meet again on Friday in Paris. Novak Djokovic and Stanislas Wawrinka are also looking for a place in the semifinals.
(5) Roger Federer vs. (4) Juan Martin Del Potro
Del Potro and Federer will be squaring off for the 19th time in their careers and for the second time in six days when they collide again in the quarterfinals of the BNP Paribas Masters on Friday afternoon. Federer leads the head-to-head series 13-5, but all five of Del Potro’s wins have come on hard courts compared to eight for Federer. The Argentine has won three in a row in the series after beating Federer 7-6(3), 2-6, 6-4 in the Basel title match on Sunday.
Both men have continued to win in Paris as they heard toward next week’s World Tour Finals. Del Potro, also a champion in Tokyo and the runner-up in Shanghai, booked his spot in the last eight by taking out Marin Cilic and Grigor Dimitrov. Federer advanced with straight-set dismissals of Kevin Anderson and Philipp Kohlschreiber. The fifth-seeded Swiss does not have home-court advantage this time around, but at some point fatigue has to catch up to Del Potro. If it happens sooner rather than later in Paris, it would not be such a bad thing because it would give the world No. 5 at least some rest before London.
Pick: Federer in 3
[polldaddy poll=7524734]
(7) Stanislas Wawrinka vs. (2) Novak Djokovic
Wawrinka and Djokovic will be meeting for the 16th time in their careers and for the third time this season. Their two previous 2013 encounters were memorable, to say the least. Djokovic prevailed both times, but not without huge struggles. He scored a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7(5), 12-10 victory at the Australian Open before persevering for a 2-6, 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win in the U.S. Open semifinals. Overall, the head-to-head series is not exactly so competitive. The Serb has won 13 of their 15 matches, including 12 in a row and eight of nine on hard courts.
Since losing in New York two days later to Rafael Nadal, Djokovic is a perfect 14-0 with titles in Beijing and Shanghai. So far in Paris, the world No. 2 has dismissed Pierre-Hugues Herbert and John Isner–losing one set to Isner in the process. Wawrinka, who clinched a berth in London on Thursday, has defeated Feliciano Lopez and Nicolas Almagro. While his record against Djokovic is not encouraging, the eighth-ranked Swiss has to take heart from his showings in this year’s thrillers. Wawrinka is due for a win, and if he puts in first serves while also firing on point with his one-handed backhand, he can disrupt Djokovic’s timing on an indoor hard court. Don’t be shocked if the underdog finally gets over the hump and gives Djokovic a head start to London.
Pick: Wawrinka in 3
[polldaddy poll=7524737]
It’s possible Djokovic and Federer may have reached an agreement to do the Beaujolais run to London ahead of the others ?
^^^^ meant to say Djokovic and Del Potro
Wawrinka in 3 would be nice!
Would be nice indeed! Rafafans could open the No 1 bottle of champagne, then. But my gut tells me, we have a little longer to wait. Hope, my gut is wrong, as it often is 🙂 .
My gut seems to be on song today 🙁
But honestly, Wawa hasn’t played great lately. And he’s saving himself for London, lol!
Oh please…………..get off the court, Wawa if this is your idea of game………….
Go pack for London, we know that’s where your heart’s at already…….
At least we haven’t got Jaw Dropping Koenig but one of the commies has called Djokovic The Best Player In the World. Way WaWa is playing anybody would look good against him.
The crowd will get really nasty if he goes on like that. They want a battle.
What, Koenig hasn’t started waxing lyrical about Djoker yet? He is on the commies’ box, no?
Apparently, Djokovic looks scary good out there, is this true Rafans?
RT @NeilHarmanTimes: “There is something about Nole today #frightening”
I mean, should we order the hemlock?
he is.
Stan is helping a little, but Djokovic is on fire
^^^Hahaha! Coxed you out of the closet Ricky! You is a Rafan!
???
just stating the facts, as I’m watching the match.
The purring continues……………
RT @NeilHarmanTimes: “The best set of tennis I’ve seen from Djokovic for quite a while. Ruthless”
RT @bgtennisnation: “@NeilHarmanTimes playing lights out with a sence that he can run table next 2 weeks to have shot at #1”
Rafa’s quaking in his boots…………not.
Spoke too soon Jaw Dropper has arrived in the box.
Djoker NOT on fire anymore
Nole is good but this is just another example of a weaker player making an excellent player look like a GOAT.
Surprised you picked him Ricky. Possible sure but far from probable. Wawa is 2-13 h2h and hasn’t beaten him since 2006!!! Wawa really has no tools to hurt Nole when Nole is near his best. Wawa can throw a temporary scare into Nole but that just wakes him up. AO was hairline close but he still lost.
“have a shot at No. 1” is the key qualifier here. It’s not on his racquet by far even IF he runs the table.
490.
Stan playing big points terribly. Djokovic taking this in simple straights
saving BPs though
WHATTA POINT
Great hold by Stan. But it’s too little too late. He should not have let the chance to break Nole go begging.
Stan 0/5 on BPs; Nole 2/3 on BPs so far.
’nuff said……….
So djokovic overreacts again when someone hits through him. Great example of why he isn’t nominated for edberg sportsmanship award.
amazing BP save with the BH by Djoker
This match is done and dusted.
These two are trying to outdo each other in the commentary box. Hope you all are appreciating the free coaching lessons 🙁
Stan playing well now. Just CANNOT convert a BP.
announcers just said Nadal did not get a time warning yesterday. True or false?
False. I did not watch the match live but am 100% certain Rafa got a TVW yesterday against Jerzy…………..
So what are these commies insinuating, that Rafa gets favourable treatment?
Rafa absolutely got a time warning yesterday. I noted it at 9:52 pm in the Paris R3 preview of Nadal vs Janowicz.
thought so
announcer during Djokovic-Wawa match: “Nadal took an average of 28 seconds between point and there was no time warning in sight.”
Ricky Dimon@November 1, 2013 at 2:21 pm
Djoko got a time warning today at 3-3, 15-15 in the second set. That is not false.
Correction to my comment at 2:46 pm
I am sorry, it was false.
Djoko got a time warning today at 2-3, 15-15 in the second set. That’s true..
I asked about Nadal.
Ricky: Hard to sometimes put the reply in the correct place, but yes, Rafa got a time warning yesterday. I noted it at 9:52 pm in the R3 preview of Nadal vs Janowicz.
GSM
NID
false
Would’ve picked Nole in 2 less than 8 games lost had it been an option.
Wawa’s a good punchbag, no?
Pretty sure Stan came to this match with his steamer trunk already packed up, next stop…….Londres!
……….and then Stan will cry after the loss…
#Sigh
why does djokovic never shake the umpires hand properly, just limply puts his hand in the umpires, makes no eye contact, and is already pulling away to celebrate. Marked contrast to Nadal/Federer who both give strong, respectful handshakes.
^^Because he is:
a. A jerk
b. A germophobe and does not want to risk catching anything nasty that the Umpires might be carrying
c. All of the above
Only one answer is correct.
D. none
Welcome to tenngrand, Christophe! (At least I think you’re new.)
Thanks chloro! Yup, I am new.
very few do. Nadal and Federer are the exception, not the rule. And I don’t agree that Nadal gives a strong handshake to umpires while making eye contact. He rarely does.
As long as you shake, it doesn’t matter how you do it.
Are you sure about that Ricky? @Augusta will prove you wrong you know…………….
#RafaAlmanac
yeah, I’m sure. Certainly when he loses he doesn’t (same with everyone).
Oh so not true Ricky. No there are good handshakes and unsportsmanlike ones…
What about the middle finger shake fishlips gave to Tipsy at DC?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=GrfEGjLmMUI#t=58
Or this one…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCRXgELAUOo
we’re talking about with the umpire
and Tipsy-Stepanek was EPIC
“And I don’t agree that Nadal gives a strong handshake to umpires while making eye contact.”
Wrong and provably so. Watch any of his match endings on Youtube.
“As long as you shake, it doesn’t matter how you do it.”
This is clearly a strange opinion to have and I’d guess you would be in the small minority in thinking this way.
don’t have to. I’ve watched more than enough Rafa matches both live and on TV to know.
And no. It is the majority opinion. Very few people think it is necessary to give any kind of specific handshake after playing a tennis match. As long as you do it all, it’s good. When you don’t, then there’s a problem.
Why doesn’t Djoker give up this YE#1 chase already? What’s he trying to prove?
#JankoSigh
Now for Fed-Delpo, no upset here, Delpo will waltz thru………………..
“Very few people think it is necessary to give any kind of specific handshake after playing a tennis match”
I’ve been playing top county level tennis in the UK for 10 years, playing tennis in general for 20 years, have been to all 4 grand slams live, and watched thousands of hours of televised tennis. I think a handshake and the quality of it IS pretty important, and so do the majority of players who I play against. Considering djokovic’s success and position in the game it is very little to ask for a former world number one to be respectful to the official. Taking the care to shake the umpires hand as a former world number 1 sets a great example to those watching.
^^second that, the last sentence I mean.
first of all, none of your credentials have anything to do with why your opinion on this matter should be more or less important than anyone else’s.
I have played tennis longer than you have and have been watching it longer; that doesn’t make my opinion any more or less meaningful than yours.
But you’re definitely the first I’ve heard to criticize someone for shaking an umpire’s hand. Just because it wasn’t “firm.”
And that last statement is an entirely different argument. Obviously I agree shaking the umpires hand sets a good example. Which is one reason why almost everyone, Djokovic included, does it after every match.
“first of all, none of your credentials have anything to do with why your opinion on this matter should be more or less important than anyone else’s.”
November 1, 2013 at 2:54 pm
Then why did you originally try and qualify your own opinion?! Bit odd:
I’ve watched more than enough Rafa matches both live and on TV to know.”
November 1, 2013 at 2:42 pm
to point out that it has nothing to do with anything, as I mentioned.
I think you misunderstood. You are the one who originally introduced “tennis watching” credentials (if that even IS a thing) as a means to qualify your opinion/argument. And then you go and say that doing so is irrelevant.
no
umm ok… good talk.
well the comment about Rafa obviously DOES apply. If you haven’t watched any Rafa matches, you won’t know what his handshake tendency is.
Ready menu for the Federazzi after TMF’s loss to Delpo today:
a. He doesn’t care, Paris is beneath him;
b. He’s too old now;
c. He felt sorry for Delpo, after all, he (Delpo) only has 1 Slam;
d. He has more important things to do, like get his hair ready for London.
It’s okay to pick all 4 above…………..
Fed will win
Delpo is back!!

First Rafa matchpoint and subsequent handshake I found on YouTube…
#EyeContact
#NID
Trawl out a video of a Rafa handshake AFTER a loss @hawkeye63, then it will really be NID……………
#RafaIsAGoodSport
It’s not opinion Ricky, it’s fact.
LOL
Welcome Christophe. I see you are going to be a lively poster 🙂
haha just spreading the truth.
Indeed! We need more like him……………can be a bit like my Mum’s knitting circle around here……
#Christophe
Only the Sod could prove my point even better…
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=U5p7c8aBe-o#t=21
i don’t think any video could be LESS applicable to this discussion!
HAHAHAHA brilliant.
First you say, nah we’re only talking about umpire handshakes not between players now somehow this is LESS applicable.
Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt, no?
Hilarious Ricky! Desperate, but hilarious nonetheless.
Just for you ritb, after Rafa has that devastating loss to Fed Wimby 07…

#EyeContact
#GOAT
haha Rafa’s handshake was barely even visible
“barely” being the operative word.
#Denial
Wailing and gnashing of teeth in Federazzistan:
RT @bgtennisnation: “Fedfan needs this win in the worst way with Delpo still has not has a top 10 win since Ausopen vs Jo-Willy”
Ricky can be a bit like Fed after a hard loss.
God, it’s KILLING me!!! 🙂 🙂
Groan……..I hope this is a case of “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”:
RT @bgtennisnation: “Fedfan looking very sharp so far in this 1st set vs Delpo like what i am seeing so far”
I smell a conspiracy, Delpo’s been told to lose this match…………
Delpo has to lose it to have any prayer in London
Needs a rest. Unlike Fed, this is Delpo’s 4th tournament in five weeks, and he has to choose between Paris and WTF. Smart guy.
Fed is still the indoor GOAT and still plays very well in those conditions.
Federer was in his element today. Gaining confidence with every match.
Impressive stats for 1st and 3rd sets. Still pretty good even in the middle set.
Not sure how much effort Delpo put into the match or whether he was just fatigued.
^^^^^^^Dont know how I managed to insert this comment here. I intended it as a post match comment.
watch from 15:10. perfect example, nadal loses and still strongly shakes the umpires hand with eye contact. Have a look at djokovic’s “handshake”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10iNxobZOxc
POINT PROVEN
Are you by any chance a Rafan 🙂
Sorry Christophe but that’s barely noticeable and don’t see how that is relevant to the debate, LOL!!!
Oh wait, my credentials (Youtube user) are much too high brow for this discussion.
Nope I’m a tennis fan.
I’m a fact fan. 🙂
^^^^Ha, ha. A jousting partner for Conspirator
Or maybe @hawkeye and @christophe are one and the same person………??
#Hash-Tag-Team
nice challenge, Fed
Delpo strikes back!!!
Man doesn’t know when to stay down.
#handshakemania
hahahaha, Delpo not the ONLY one, no?
What are the odds Delpo won’t try so hard in the decider?
in all fairness, while barely visible there was nothing tentative about that particular handshake…. after one of his most devastating losses of all the years prior or after … and it is clear too he looked right at the umpire.
He knows, chloro, he knows. That’s why he said “barely”.
#FreudianSlip
my post @ 4:30pm was meant for the other thread, re. the video you posted of Wimbie ’08
ok so I see it was on this thread among the older comments, scratch the above note
This discussion isn’t scientific at all. We clearly need to introduce eye-contact-o and fist-o-meters here. Surely Mr. Hawk could come up with something 99% accurate.
I don’t mean you, hawkeye63, but the great and talented inventor, whose device added game show elements to pro tennis matches.
Its Djokovic vs Federer next.
could be ugly
Why?
failed bigtime on the Stan pick, but Fed pick was NID
Djokovic will probably demolish Federer.
Delpo’s loss means that he’ll remain behind Ferru in the Race to London. Delpo will be in Djoko’s group at the WTF (and Ferru – in Rafa’s group). Well done, Delpo! 🙂
Congrats to TMF fan (if there are any here). Even tougher ask tomorrow vs Nole.
Go get him, TMF and seal No. 1 for Rafa!!!!
Vamos TMF the Indoor GOAT!!!!
Just realized Nole and Fed haven’t met once this year.
Last meeting was WTF final last year.
Nole gonna lay the hurt on the old goat.
Interviewer: What’s your prediction for the fight?
Clubber Lang: My prediction?
Interviewer: Yes, your prediction.
[Clubber looks into camera]
Clubber Lang: Pain!
Augusta – How do the seedings work in RR matches in WTF? can youtellme please?
BTW I am picking Fed to beat Djoko tomm .. He looked very good tday except midway to the end in 2nd set.
Augusta – How do the seedings work in RR matches in WTF? can youtellme please?
BTW I am picking Fed to beat Djoko tomm .. He looked very good tday except midway to the end in 2nd set.
Ricky – Why do u say Djoko-Fed will be ugly?
However I think Fed could be gassed for WTF..he would have played 3 weeks in a row
Sanju I finally got a suitable consistent (although convoluted) explanation of why Rafa wasn’t penalized for Basel withdrawal.
and what is that? I hope its not prayers of Rafans around the world 🙂
hawk
we all want to know… what is that explanation?
I will try. Rafa had met his 500 commitment for 2013 and he withdrew in time.
1 and 2 in separate halves.
3 and 4 randomly drawn into opposite halves.
5-6 randomly drawn into opposite halves.
7-8 randomly drawn into opposite halves.
If its random why do you say augusta- Delpo will be in Djoko’s group at the WTF (and Ferru – in Rafa’s group).

Sanju@November 1, 2013 at 5:04 pm
I made a wrong conclusion. I looked at the groups of last year. No. 1, 3, 5, 7 happened to be in group A and No. 2, 4, 6, 8 – in group B.
http://www.barclaysatpworldtourfinals.com/en/event/rules-and-format
yeah, it doesn’t matter for Delpo that he is still behind Ferrer
Which means, Delpo still could end up in Rafa’s half.
Realising his son has a limp handshake
http://s1.reutersmedia.net/resources/r/?m=02&d=20110126&t=2&i=317981769&w=320&fh=&fw=&ll=&pl=&r=img-2011-01-26T221840Z_01_NOOTR_RTRMDNC_0_India-544250-1
My father judged all my prospective boyfriends by their handshake. Anyone with a limp handshake got short shrift from him and had their fingers crushed on the next encounter.
#SortingWheatFromTheChaff
This handshake business should really be on the non-tennis thread. Doesn’t have much to do with the QFs 🙂
extremely well said. forgive him though, since he is new.
Good
