Nottingham SF preview and prediction: Cuevas vs. Muller

Gilles Muller is potentially two wins away from his first ATP title. He came within one victory of the feat earlier this month but lost to Nicolas Mahut in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. Now Pablo Cuevas is standing in his way in the Nottingham semis.

Pablo Cuevas and Gilles Muller will be going head-to-head for the first time when they battle for a spot in the title match of the AEGON Open on Friday afternoon.

Nobody has been more active than Muller on this grass-court swing. The 32-year-old Luxembourgian boasts nine match victories in two full tournaments and now some of a third. He finished runner-up in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, reached the Queen’s Club quarterfinals, and is through to the last four this week following defeats of Jiri Vesely, Mikhail Youzhny, and Alexandr Dolgopolov.

Prior to this week, Cuevas had won two ATP-level matches on grass in his entire career. He has already won three in Nottingham–over Stephane Robert, Daniel Evans, and Marcos Baghdatis. The 25th-ranked Uruguayan needed three sets to beat both Evans and Baghdatis, even recovering from trailing 4-0 in a decisive tiebreaker and saving one match point against the Cypriot on Friday.

It feels like it may finally be Muller’s time in Nottingham–but if it isn’t, it will likely be Andreas Seppi, Kevin Anderson, or Steve Johnson stopping him in the final. On this surface, Cuevas will almost certainly be out of his league in the semis.

Pick: Muller in 2

  1. Gilles is just on fire here while cuevas is miraculously at this stage. I gotta say muller has got a real shot at the title here.

  2. and Muller does what he does best… He goes and loses the match. Wow, only saw now, Thiem vs Mayer up first round, think Dominic comes through this time, knows he wasnt aggressive enough in that first match up
