Alexandr Dolgopolov had arguably been the most impressive player at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel heading into semifinal Friday. The Ukrainian remained red hot in the first set against Bernard Tomic, taking it 6-1 while breaking serve three times. As for Tomic, he looked like he was ready to head home to Australia and prepare for next weekend’s Davis Cup tie against the United States.
But the tide turned in a major way and Tomic somehow stormed back to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
This was the Aussie’s reaction following his comeback victory:
Dolgopolov misses one of his crazy-looking forehands in the net, Dolgopolov imitates it:
Tomic also made no secret about whom he wants to face in Saturday’s final–either Dominic Thiem or Sam Querrey.
“I hope that Querrey wins,” the No. 5 seed admitted.
great post match reaction
absolutely! and a fascinating match to watch
Dolgo was the architect of his own downfall. Continue to be impressed by the Tomic turnaround since he gave up on the ‘bad boy’behaviour and concentrates on his tennis.
Good win for Bernie.
I always find Tomic a very talented tennis player. He’s a bit like Murray, uses his changes of pace very well. He’s not one who attacks like Dolgo, but patiently plays the point. Dolgo OTOH is a bit more impatient, probably not as physically fit, hence tends to play and attack quickly.
I like watching these two play each other (they already played each other 10 times!) as they use spins and slices to change pace so well.
Tomic, Dolgo, Thiem, Dimi, Raonic – they play differently from each other and make things interesting among the next gen guys. The next next gen, we have Kygrios, Zverev, Friz,Coric to keep things interesting too.
I do feel the end of the so called ‘golden era’ – from Fed to Rafa to Novak/Murray/Delpo – is near…..
Lucky: Me too
All good things have to end. 🙁
#RIP
I’m still not sure how Tomic beat Dolgo last night…Dolgo seemed to have it all going his way…no wonder Tomic was surprised! bagman vs Lopez was also fun to watch….long, creative, points….great slice backhands etc.
