Andy Murray coaching Novak Djokovic is the kind of thing you would hear as a social media April Fools’ Day joke.
This, though, is–apparently–for real.
Both PR teams confirmed Djokovic’s announcement on Saturday that Murray will join his coaching team at least through the 2025 Australian Open. The Scot will reportedly work with the 24-time Grand Slam champion in preparation for and during the first slam of next season.
“I am excited to have one of my greatest rivals on the same side of the net, as my coach,” Djokovic released in a statement. “Looking forward to start of the season and competing in Australia alongside Andy, with whom I have shared many exceptional moments on the Australian soil.”
Said Murray, “I’m going to be joining Novak’s team in the off season, helping him to prepare for the Australian Open. I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals.”
Murray, 37, retired from tennis at this summer’s Paris Olympics. He last played singles at Queen’s Club in June.
Although it was overshadowed a bit by the Big 3 matchups taking place simultaneously, the Djokovic vs. Murray rivalry is among the most extensive in ATP history. They squared off 36 times, with the Serb leading the head-to-head series 25-11. The Australia-bound duo is no stranger to sparring Down Under, where Djokovic won all five of their matches–including four finals.
having a hard time believing this!
Was part of the deal that Djokovic would give back to Murray the majors he should have won? 🙂
