Rafael Nadal said following the Paris Olympics that his participating in the upcoming U.S. Open was doubtful. On Wednesday he confirmed it, officially withdrawing from the season’s fourth and final Grand Slam.
“Hi all, writing today to let you guys know that I have decided not to compete at this year’s U.S. Open, a place where I have amazing memories,” Nadal posted on social media. “I will miss those electric and special night sessions in NYC at Ashe, but I don’t think I would be able to give my 100 percent this time.
“Thanks to all my U.S. fans in particular, will miss you all and will see you another time. Best of luck to all for the always amazing U.S. Open! My next event will be the Laver Cup in Berlin.”
Nadal, who is a four-time champion at Flushing Meadows, has played sparingly in 2024 due to hip injury. The 38-year-old Spaniard finished runner-up in Bastad, but he has never looked 100 percent physically and certainly not anywhere close to peak form. Nadal advanced one round in singles at the Olympics, beating Marton Fucsovics before falling to eventual gold medalist Novak Djokovic. The 22-time Grand Slam winner reached the doubles quarterfinals with singles silver medalist Carlos Alcaraz.
The Laver Cup is scheduled for September 20-22.
