Nadal vs. Tomic: The tennis world makes its picks

A blockbuster first-round Australian Open showdown is set for Tuesday night in Rod Laver Arena, with world No. 1 Rafael Nadal facing Aussie hope Bernard Tomic. Players, coaches, and relatives make their match predictions.

No, this is not real. Although it might be.

Bernard Tomic: I’m happy for Rafa that he made it to this point in the tournament, but it looks like his luck has run out having to go up against Me. I think My game will be way too much for him, just like it was for 10 dominant games on My part against him at the 2011 Aussie. I just hope this is more competitive than I anticipate, because I would like to get at least some practice in before facing Novak in the final–if he makes it that far. Tomic 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.

Rafael Nadal: For sure I am not favorite. This is the true, no? But just accept because this is the normal for the first round of Grand Slam, no? Can never be favorite in first round, not after what happened versus Shark Steve at Wimbledon. Well, I do not think it is fair to make a predictication for the result, but I will try my best to have chance and we will see what’s gonna happen. Yes, no?

Andy Murray: I don’t care and won’t watch for three reasons: 1) Monfils isn’t in the match, 2) I wouldn’t play either one of these lads until the semifinals, which I have no chance of reaching, and 3) it’s on Court 13 and therefore won’t be televised. In a more important match I’ll take Monfils over Harrison 7-6(13), 6-0, 6-0.

Juan Monaco: I did a simulation of this match by playing it 37 times on the Nintendo Wii. I played as a Rafa and won all 37 times. Lost a few games along the way, but that was only because I was playing one-handed due to my wrist (which I’ll also do against Gulbis to give him a chance). Anyone know how the Panthers did against the 49ers of St. Francis? Rafa 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.

Maria Sharapova: Grigor Dimitrov is the only men’s player I’ve heard of who isn’t in the Top 20. So obviously Rafa. Rafa 6-0, 6-0, 6-0.

John Tomic: If it was actually a hard opponent I would fight whoever it was beforehand to soften him up for Bernard. However, I don’t see anyone in this particular field who would necessitate such a measure. Certainly not Nadal. Hewitt I will probably kill prior to the match if he makes it to the fourth round against Bernard, but that would just be cause I want to–not because he would win. As for this one, I’ll be surprised if this Nadal fellow completes the match. Tomic 6-0, 6-0, 5-0 RET.

Thomas Drouet: Bernard will be lucky if he doesn’t look worse than this by the time Rafa gets through with him. Nadal 6-0, 3-0 DEF.

Toni Nadal: This could be close because Rafa has much to work on. In Doha he had no serve. No forehand. No backhand. No volley. No movement. No clear thinking in the head. Other than that he was decent. However, Rafa should be properly motivated, as I told him–seriously–that if he loses, he will spend 24 hours a day over the next 12 days walking Maggie and Rusty around Melbourne Park. I’m also going to take away his nutella jar, his Shakira’s “Oral Fixation” album, and his Bar Refaeli poster. Rafa 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(6), 7-6(4).

Chris Evert: Hopefully Tomic, just so Roger’s half of the draw opens up with Rafa out. Tomic 3-6, 2-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(5), 18-16.

Robin Soderling: Tomic 6-2, 6-7(2), 6-4, 7-6(2).

10 Comments on Nadal vs. Tomic: The tennis world makes its picks

  1. Is this going to be a new feature? Anyway, I just remembered that in your tournament predictions you picked Rafa in three sets. Good pick!

  2. Monaco must’ve been upset that the Panthers lost to the 49ers of St. Francis. That can be the only explanation for his loss to Ernie.

  3. Has anyone been watching JJ and this Aussie kid who is ranked 300 something? The Aussie kid Anderson was up two sets to none, but now JJ has won the third set and is up a break in the fourth set. JJ looked awful for two sets and this kid was playing very well, but now the momentum seems to have turned.

They switched away from the match to a woman’s match – Kvitova vs some Cambodian girl. In the third set. Tight match.

I also heard that Dodig beat Karlovic.
