It’s official: Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz–if both are healthy when the time comes–will play doubles together at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
David Ferrer, who is the captain of the Spanish National Team for the upcoming Games, announced the majority of his roster on Wednesday.
“One pair, which I think everyone knows and was hoping for, is Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal,” Ferrer revealed. “The second pair is yet to be decided; it hasn’t been 100 percent confirmed yet.”
Marcel Granollers will occupy one of the other doubles spots, but his partner remains to be seen. Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Pablo Carreno Busta were named to Spain’s singles squad. On the women’s side, captain Anabel Medina’s roster includes Sara Sorribes Tormo and Cristina Bucsa. Paula Badosa is not participating.
Nadal is already a gold medalist in both singles and doubles. The 37-year-old triumphed in singles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics before teaming up with Marc Lopez to win eight years later in Rio de Janeiro. Nadal has played sparingly this season due to a hip injury but looked healthy at the end of the clay-court swing following a first round loss at the French Open to eventual runner-up Alexander Zverev.
“My main goal now is to play Olympics,” said Nadal, who will reportedly skip Wimbledon. “That’s going to be here. So I need to prepare myself the proper way to try to arrive here healthy and well prepared, and then let’s see.”
Alcaraz captured his first French Open title this past Sunday with a 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Zverev.
