Monte-Carlo third-round picks, including Ferrer vs. Dimitrov

Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters

(9) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. (10) Fabio Fognini: Fognini in 2. Fognini is red hot; Tsonga is not. This outcome would likely be different on grass or a fast hard court, but the Frenchman won’t be able to hit through against his in-form opponent on clay.

(1) Rafael Nadal vs. Andreas Seppi: Nadal in 2. Nadal is 3-0 against Seppi on clay and 8-1 in total sets in those three matches. One-way traffic will be the order of the day.

Lukas Rosol vs. (4) Roger Federer: Federer in 2. Federer destroyed Rosol in Dubai and more of the same can be expected in this one. Rosol is no slouch on clay, but it won’t help his game against Federer.

(LL) Pablo Carreno Busta vs. (2) Novak Djokovic: Djokovic in 2. PCB has to be satisfied already with his week as a lucky-loser entrant in the third round.

(11) Tommy Robredo vs. (8) Milos Raonic: Robredo in 2. The surface will dictate the outcome of this matchup almost every time. On clay? Advantage, Robredo.

(3) Stanislas Wawrinka vs. (15) Nicolas Almagro: Wawrinka in 3. A battle of two fine clay-court players should go to Wawrinka, who lost only two games to Marin Cilic on Wednesday.

(12) Grigor Dimitrov vs. (6) David Ferrer: Ferrer in 3. Are tales of Dimitrov’s rise more exaggerated than those of Ferrer’s decline? Clay may not give us the answer, because Ferrer should have a considerable advantage on that surface.

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez vs. (5) Tomas Berdych: Berdych in 2. Garcia-Lopez is in outstanding form, but at some point all of this tennis has catch up with him.

  1. I can’t believe how Fognini let that second set get away! He had umpteen break point chances at 3-3 and blew all of them. Then he was promptly broken by Tsonga and there went the second set.

    What is with this guy?

  2. it starts off with Tsonga leaving after the 1st game to go to the loo. Fog retaliates by taking an MO to have his leg strapped.

  3. Totally agree…Fog is the worst of the “head cases”…maybe worse than Gulbis….very poor performance in the 3rd….he needs to take a page from Rafa and Fed!
