Matteo Berrettini is hoping to build some momentum for his 2023 season on clay following some disappointing results in the first few months. The 22nd-ranked Italian is just 6-6 for the year after beating Maxime Cressy 6-4, 6-2 in round one of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters on Monday.
However, Cressy’s game isn’t at all suited for clay and now Berrettini has to go up against an in-form Francisco Cerundolo. The Argentine recently advanced to the Miami quarterfinals and he is great on clay–as displayed again by crushing a red-hot Cameron Norrie 6-3, 6-4 in the Monte-Carlo opening round.
Berrettini would probably have the edge on grass or a very fast hard court, but Cerundolo should prevail on this surface.
Pick: Cerundolo in 3
