There is no rest for the weary on the Sunshine Double. Less than 24 hours after the BNP Paribas Open concluded with Jack Draper’s victory over Holger Rune, the draw for a second consecutive Masters 1000 event was revealed.
The Miami Open draw ceremony was held on Monday ceremony and it resulted in Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic finding themselves together in the bottom half of the bracket. A head-to-head showdown in the semifinals is possible, but Djokovic could have to face Daniil Medvedev in the quarters. That section also includes Adelaide and Montpellier champion Felix Auger-Aliassime, Dubai winner Stefanos Tsitsipas, and 2024 Wimbledon semifinalist Lorenzo Musetti.
Alcaraz will kick off his fortnight against either David Goffin or Aleksandar Vukic before potentially running into Brandon Nakashima, Grigor Dimitrov, and then either Casper Ruud or Tommy Paul in the quarters.
On the other side of the draw, Draper and Rune are on a collision course for a fourth-round rematch. However, neither man will be looking ahead. Draper will probably begin his bid for a second straight Masters 1000 title against Jakub Mensik, while Rune likely awaits Reilly Opelka in round two and Tomas Machac in the last 32. Elsewhere in that quarter, No. 1 seed Alexander Zverev may get a shot at revenge against Tallon Griekspoor in round four. Griekspoor just upset Zverev in the Indian Wells second round on the Dutchman’s way to the quarterfinals.
Last but not least, Taylor Fritz’s section is wide open. It isn’t top heavy, but it boasts plenty of depth. Fritz’s season has been slow to get going due in part to an abdominal injury, so the door could be open for guys like Andrey Rublev, Alex de Minaur, Ben Shelton, 2021 Miami champion Hubert Hurkacz, Denis Shapovalov, and Matteo Berrettini.
First-round matchups to watch are Griekspoor vs. Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Mensik vs. Roberto Bautista Agut, Kei Nishikori vs. Yoshihito Nishioka, Nuno Borges vs. Zizou Begs, and Joao Fonseca vs. Learner Tien.
