The Miami Open draw ceremony took place on Monday afternoon and there is a chance the final could be a rematch of the Indian Wells championship, as No. 3 seed Daniil Medvedev landed on the opposite side from top-seeded Carlos Alcaraz.
At the BNP Paribas Open, Alcaraz took down Jannik Sinner in the semis and Medvedev in the final. In the second leg of the Sunshine Double, the 20-year-old Spaniard can face only one of those two rivals. Both Sinner and Medvedev are in the bottom half of the bracket and would go head-to-head in the final four if they advance that far. Alcaraz’s projected semifinal opponent is No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev.
Sinner’s section is absolutely loaded. The third-ranked Italian could meet Indian Wells semifinalist Tommy Paul in the last 16 and No. 5 seed Andrey Rublev in the quarters. Stefanos Tsitsipas and Frances Tiafoe are two other guys with plenty of talent who find themselves in this quarter, which is also home to a pair of blockbuster first-round showdowns: Andy Murray vs. Matteo Berrettini and Athur Fils vs. Matteo Arnaldi.
Medvedev’s road isn’t an easy one, either. The Russian could meet a red-hot Ugo Humbert in round four and either Casper Ruud or Taylor Fritz in the last eight.
Alcaraz’s path to the Sunshine Double (it has not been completed since Roger Federer in 2017) is likely to include Gael Monfils in the third round, Ben Shelton in the fourth, and either Hubert Hurkacz or Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals. The world No. 2, who won this event in 2022 before losing to Sinner in last year’s semis, will begin his quest for a second Miami title against either Aleksandar Vukic or Roberto Carballes Baena.
Zverev’s section is without question the deepest and most up for grabs. It also features Holger Rune, Acapulco champion Alex de Minaur, Doha champion Karen Khachanov, Indian Wells quarterfinalist Jiri Lehecka, Miami specialist Francisco Cerundolo (the Argentine has reached the semis and the quarters in back-to-back appearances), and an unseeded contingent that includes Felix Auger-Aliassime, Kei Nishikori, Lorenzo Sonego, and Fabian Marozsan. Zverev’s opening match could come against Felix Auger-Aliassime.
