Joe Smith commented on the post, 2020 Laver Cup cancelled, will stay in Boston next year 4 years, 7 months ago
Looks like Djokovic may be the last man back on the tour…it’s so bad to have this kind of publicity for the anti-vaxxers

I hope you’re right, Scoot!

It will be interesting to see what the top of the men’s game will look like once tennis returns, which imo will not be until there is a vaccine or herd immunity, so at least a year, probably more. Given the age of […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Nadal joins field for Virtual Madrid Masters 4 years, 7 months ago
Great idea! I don’t know anything about video games; I take it this is a recognized game. Which one is it? I wonder how the player who wins the tournament would do against an experienced gamer.

Yes, that’s probably right. Plus, Rafa gets the edge because he’s had it his whole career, whereas Novak was pretty weak mentally for the first few years.

Joe Smith commented on the post, Can tennis do a complete schedule restructure like golf? 4 years, 7 months ago
I really don’t see this happening, for a few reasons. First, I don’t know that tennis is economically viable without ticket-paying fans, and permitting crowds of fans (say, of over 500 people) is probably the last […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Wimbledon officially cancelled in 2020 due to coronavirus 4 years, 7 months ago
Our best hope for all of this is 1) that we all stay home and keep our distance from each other as much as possible; and 2) that there has never been such a concerted effort among the world’s scientists toward one […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Wimbledon officially cancelled in 2020 due to coronavirus 4 years, 7 months ago
Honestly, I think there is a good chance that Wimbledon 2021 will not be played. There may not be international sport for a long time.

Joe Smith commented on the post, The Djokovic hate is as unfair as it is inevitable 4 years, 7 months ago
I’ve only just read this, as a distraction. I have never understood the dislike for Djokovic. To me, he is the most gracious loser of the big three. I’m sure there must be some exceptions, but I’m hard pressed to […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Coronavirus cancels tennis at least through clay-court swing 4 years, 8 months ago
No chance we’ll see any grass court tennis either. I honestly don’t think we’ll see any more tennis this year. A lot of countries would have to open up their borders and there’s going to be a lot of distrust that […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, French Open moved to late September and early October 4 years, 8 months ago
If we see any tennis this year I’ll be amazed. Tennis is the last sport that will come online. It’s completely international, and most countries are closing their borders. This thing is going to come in waves, and […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, All levels of tennis likely on hold due to coronavirus 4 years, 8 months ago
Life is going to be very different for the foreseeable future, including professional sports. I’d say there’s a decent chance that we won’t see any more tennis through the US Open. Things are going to get worse […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Desert deserted: Indian Wells cancelled due to coronavirus 4 years, 8 months ago
There are certainly a lot of inconsistencies with respect to which events are going ahead and which are cancelled. I tend to agree with littlefoot that from one perspective this is all an over-reaction and the […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Australian Open final preview and prediction: Djokovic vs. Thiem 4 years, 9 months ago
One thing that did stand out to me, in comparing Thiem to Wawrinka as Novak-opponents, is that Stan’s flatter ball causes more problems for Djokovic than Thiem’s topspinny shots, even if the latter come with just […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Big 3 dominance continues as Djokovic battles to eighth Australian Open title 4 years, 9 months ago
Congrats to Novak Djokovic! Even at less than his best he was able to prevail. However, to me it is clear that Thiem lost a winnable match. Rafa played him better in losing than Djokovic did in winning. The key […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Australian Open final preview and prediction: Djokovic vs. Thiem 4 years, 9 months ago
Thiem takes the 3rd set! he’s kind of following a Wawrinka blue-print in his approach. He’s started to hit the DTL backhand a bit better, after really missing it for most of the match. But even without that shot, […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Australian Open final preview and prediction: Djokovic vs. Thiem 4 years, 9 months ago
Thiem now in control of this match, two breaks up in set 3. Novak actually looks a bit old, not matching the energy or pace of Thiem. And to be honest, Novak hasn’t had a lot of tests so far in this tournament. He […]

Joe Smith commented on the post, Martina and McEnroe right about Margaret Court Arena 4 years, 9 months ago
‘Fanaticism’ about favorite tennis players is just fine. There’s no question of truth as to who should be one’s favorite tennis player, and one can like a particular player for any reason or no reason at all. But […]
