Medvedev makes it four titles in five tournaments, beats Sinner in Miami

With a Sunshine Double’s worth of finals already under his belt, Daniil Medvedev was not about to go home without a winner’s trophy.

Medvedev, who lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final, defeated Jannik Sinner 7-5, 6-2 in the Miami Open championship match on Sunday afternoon. The Russian recovered from a break down in the opening set and then rolled the rest of the way to triumph after one hour and 34 minutes.

Starting in the middle of the first set, Sinner was clearly struggling physically. The 11th-ranked Italian revealed afterward that he woke up with an illness, and Medvedev made sure to pounce on the opportunity. The world No. 5 dominated almost all of the long rallies and broke Sinner four times to help make up for an alarming six double-faults.

“I’m really happy,” Medvedev commented. “Today was a tough match. It was probably the hottest day and the most humid during the day. It was not easy conditions. I don’t know if Jannik had a small injury or cramp. I was also struggling; tried not to show it.

“I haven’t won’t such a big title in probably a year and a half. At the end I was quite shaky. Not even tight, because I’m not scared to win. But still the hands get a little shaky so the serve is a little bit tougher…. I managed to get myself together and close the match.”

Medvedev has now played five finals in his last five events, also prevailing in Rotterdam, Doha, and Dubai prior to his runner-up performance at the Indian Wells Masters.

He will climb to fourth in the rankings on Monday, while Sinner is set to break back into the top 10 at a career-high No. 9.
