Alexander Zverev’s clutch victory over Kevin Anderson on Sunday gave Team Europe its second consecutive Laver Cup triumph. Despite Jack Sock’s best efforts (the American was featured in every doubles match of the event, and won them all), Team World once again came up short.
The final match of the weekend, Novak Djokovic vs. Nick Kyrgios was a throw-away. Zverev’s three points for his defeat of Kevin Anderson 10-7 in the super-tiebreak during Sunday’s third rubber gave the Europeans the 13 points they needed to lift the second annual cup.
“It was such a close match all around, not only this one but all weekend, a few points here and there and it could have been different,” Zverev reflected. “I’m just happy to get the win and we defended the title; that’s the most important thing.”
“It’s been an unbelievable week,” Europe captain Bjorn Borg commented. “This is actually my favorite week of the year. I’m very proud of my team. We knew it’s going to be very difficult to beat Team World with John (McEnroe) as the captain. He has a great team, they’re very professional.”
“I’d just like to congratulate Team Europe,” McEnroe added. “It was a great effort, great match, unbelievably exciting. [My] team, I’m so proud of these guys. They’ve got great camaraderie and we’re going to win this one next year.”
Europe, consisting of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev, Grigor Dimitrov, David Goffin, and Kyle Edmund, takes home the Laver Cup for the second time in as many years. The 2017 team–which included Rafael Nadal–was victorious after needing to play a final, decisive match between Federer and Kyrgios.
Most of the players on both squads will head from Chicago to Asia to finish up that last hard-court swing of the 2018 season.
liked it? didn’t like it? watched it? didn’t watch it?
Did anyone else get the feeling djokovic was more like a supporting actor ? His chemistry with roger is nowhere close to what roger has with Rafa..tge banter n camaraderie there is way better..the djoKo fed double was cold too..
Fed coaching zverev was masterclass..don’t move back n back n back..lol
Love this event….mostly because Roger loves it….and what’s good for Roger is good for tennis! Loved all the doubles matches, and I agree that Roger-Rafa chemistry was way better than Roger-Joker. Isner-Fed match was a lot of fun.
The Laver Cup is Fed’s business event. He has to love his own business.
