Karen Khachanov suffered an apparent groin injury midway through the third set of his semifinal match against Ugo Humbert at the Rolex Paris Masters on Saturday night. Khachanov’s movement was significantly hampered the rest of the way, leading to a 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-3 loss. He even crumpled to the ground prior to match point while serving at 3-5, 0-40.
Despite facing a hobbled opponent toward the end of the two-hour and 45-minute contest, Humbert continued to celebrate victorious points with his raucous French fanbase–an interaction that his been on display this entire week. Unsurprisingly, Khachanov was not impressed.
“No class,” the Russian could be heard telling Humbert at the conclusion of their handshake, which was preceded by plenty of other words–albeit inaudible.
Khachanov’s ire spilled over in to the press room, as well.
“I told him at the net to [have more] respect. (He has) no idea how to behave. I will congratulate him if he behaves like a normal person…. I’m not unhappy with the crowd; I don’t have any problem with that.
“Did you see if I celebrated yesterday? Okay, Grigor (Dimitrov) was exhausted. Did you see (if) I was jumping and screaming “come on” (or) “allez” every point? Do you think it’s okay? You can celebrate with the crowd after; you can do whatever you want. But while you see injuries…to [celebrate] while the guy is on the ground…. Okay. See you next time.”
Much to the delight of the French fans, they will see Humbert again on Sunday afternoon in the final against Alexander Zverev. The world No. 18 can become the first player from the host nation to lift the Paris trophy since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 2008.
“It is amazing to do it in Paris at my favorite tournament,” Humbert assured. “It is a dream. It was a little bit difficult compared to the previous matches. I felt a little more pressure and after the loss of the first set I tried to enjoy the moment and be with the crowd. I did very well and I am super proud.”
love to see it
Yes. Love his game.
Just doing Metz predictions , if Humbert wins here, he’ll pull out .
I doubt he would’ve won if Khachanov didn’t get injured. Khach got multiple breaks in the first set and he likely would’ve done the same once he refocused.
Khach had a solid season which will set him up well for 2025. He’s back inside the top 20.
He just needs to rest, recover and rebuild himself physically in preparation for 2025. Be patient and be smart.
