Miomir Kecmanovic came back from 5-2 down in the third set and saved two championship points to stun Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 in the final of the Delray Beach Open on Sunday afternoon.
Davidovich Fokina could not have come closer to capturing his first ATP title. In his second final, the Spaniard missed his first match point when a forehand went just wide at the end of a long rally. On the next chance, Kecmanovic struck a winning forehand volley that bounced off the net cord.
From there, the Serb’s improbable comeback was on.
“It feels unbelievable to win after losing [my last two] finals before and then down 5-2, match points,” said Kecmanovic, who won his second ATP title in his fifth final. “It was an amazing feeling and I’m so proud of myself…. It’s an unbelievable week. I’ve worked so hard, I’ve done everything I could right. It didn’t happen for a long time, but I kept believing and I’m so happy to finally win another title.”
The 25-year-old’s previous triumph came five years ago on the clay courts of Kitzbuhel. Davidovich Fokina’s other runner-up performance was at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2022.
Following his singles success, Kecmanovic came right back out in doubles and won the title with Brand Nakashima–defeating Dallas champions Evan King and Christian Harrison 7-6(3), 1-6, 10-3.
nice one, Kec
If you add an “a” you’ll be right, “Keca” is how they call him, more or less rule when you shorten Slavic names Mikhail “Mischa” (Zverev), Alexander “Sascha” (Zverev) and so on, an “a” at the end.
Of course you are free to call anyway you like.
