The initial entry list for the upcoming BNP Paribas Open was announced on Wednesday. All of the top 76 players in the ATP rankings are currently in the Indian Wells field, including world No. 1 Jannik Sinner and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Also scheduled to take his talents to Tennis Paradise next month is Nick Kyrgios. The 29-year-old Australian has played only three matches since October of 2022, including two this season (lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in a third-set tiebreaker at the Brisbane International and to Jake Fearnley in straight sets at the Aussie Open). Kyrgios at least managed to make it through the entirety of those matches, but he looked far from 100 percent in Melbourne.
Despite any lingering physical problems, the former Wimbledon finalist recently confirmed that he plans on returning in Indian Wells.
He wrote on social media, “To my fans! Appreciate all the support – I will be back home training with my next event being Indian wells was bad timing as was battling through a 4cm abdominal tear/strain at the Australian open. I will be doing everything I can to rehab and prepare for the next events.”
Americans Jenson Brooksby and Reilly Opelka are also into the Indian Wells main draw with protected rankings. Opelka’s strong start to the 2025 campaign includes a quarterfinal showing at this week’s Dallas Open.
There are four former champions in the men’s field. Joining Alcaraz are Novak Djokovic (five titles), Cameron Norrie (2021), and Taylor Fritz (2022). Djokovic, who has not lifted the trophy since 2016, suffered a shocking third-round loss to Luca Nardi last season. This is a home tournament for Fritz, who reached the semifinals the year Norrie won it (October of ’21) before capturing the title five months later.
The BNP Paribas Open in Palm Springs, California is the first Masters 1000 tournament on the men’s side in 2025 and it is a Premier 1000 event for the women.
