Houston R1 preview and prediction: Wolf vs. Thompson

J. J. Wolf and Jordan Thompson will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they clash in round one of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championship on Tuesday.

They also faced each other in a first-round match at this year’s Australian Open, where Wolf prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. The rematch figures to be much lower in quality, as neither man is skilled on clay. Wolf has played only 17 matches on this surface in his entire career (9-8 record), while Thompson is a horrendous 5-14 on clay over the past three seasons.

Anything can happen in this matchup given the clay-court element, but Wolf should have a slight edge based on their previous meeting and because he has won nine matches on the main tour already this season–three times as many as the Aussie.

Pick: Wolf in 3
