The United States won the United Cup for the second time in three years by defeating two-time runner-up Poland on Sunday in Sydney, Australia. Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz swept the singles rubbers for the Americans, with the former upsetting Iga Swiatek 6-4, 6-4 before Fritz provided the clincher with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(4) defeat of Hubert Hurkacz.
Gauff’s heroics set the tone. The world No. 3 had been 2-11 lifetime in the head-to-head series with Swiatek, but she was on fire Down Under heading into Sunday’s final–perhaps indicating that the tide might turn. Sure enough, Gauff rolled to victory in one hour and 52 minutes. The 20-year-old compiled a 5-0 record in singles at the United Cup and did not drop a single set while beating Swiatek, Leylah Fernandez, Donna Vekic, Shuai Zhang, and Karolina Muchova.
“I have the belief that I’m one of the best players in the world and when I play good tennis I’m hard to beat,” Gauff commented. “Today I think I played some great tennis. I’m glad I was able to get a point for Team USA. It was tough today, I’m not gonna lie.”
It was even tougher for Fritz. In a match that featured just one break of serve apiece, the world No. 4 outlasted Hurkacz in a third-set tiebreaker–requiring two hours and 18 minutes to secure the cup.
“It’s amazing,” Fritz assured. “It’s almost more fun to win the team events because you have people to celebrate with afterwards. Coco made it easy for me as the MVP on the team; it definitely helped my job a lot and its great to get it a second time.”
“It’s great to win a team event, the only team event I’ve ever won,” Gauff added. “So I’m super excited.”
Team USA also triumphed in 2023–the inaugural year of this relatively new event–by sweeping Italy in the final. Poland reached the semifinals two years ago and lost the final to Germany last year.
nice one, USA
😭Hubie and Iga
always so close at this tournament
Iga is such a sore loser, maybe she needs some of that “contaminated” melatonin, available only in Poland.
Good job Americans👍
yep
It is a bit surprising that Wog Boy is pro-American 👍
I’m not anti-American, just not supporting any American team with (Fitz)
And I am proud of Coco Gauff! Everyone who knows me here knows Iga, Hubie, and Aga Radwanska; one very tall Winner of Paris Bercy (his name escapes me) are favorites. There have been talented Poles who I followed in pro-cycling as well. And I love some Polish musicians, both new and old.
Authentic Polish potato salad – no potato salad compares 🙂
Jerzy Janowicz
(runner-up)
That’s him! Unforgettable Jerzy Janowicz.
Please Ricky allow me to respond.
“It is a bit surprising that Wog Boy is pro-American 👍”
I did challenge you long time ago on the other site to quote where did I say I am anti-American, after you claimed so, you never responded, but disappeared, don’t try again. Throwing mud at someone knowing some will stick is nasty and not nice.
You have to distinguish between disagreeing with someone foreign policy and hating the people of that country, which I don’t and never ever said so, I don’t hate any people, I work with Americans for the last 30 years and I worked in American embassy in Belgrade in ‘80’s prior coming to Australia and can say only the best about American people, I still work with the top end American travel company that brings tennis fans to AO and Australia, their biggest problem is why Australia don’t serve tomato ketchup in the restaurants but only tomato sauce:)
I really don’t need anybody’s thumbs up for my opinion, particularly not yours, thank you.
Thank you Ricky for being fair and professional, as for further engagement in such discussion, it won’t be any from my side.
Ketchup= Catchup ?
