Frenchmen Tsonga, Monfils withdraw from Rogers Cup

The first of the two North American summer Masters events will be without Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils. The Frenchmen have withdrawn due to injuries. Rafael Nadal, however, is already on site practicing.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga pulled out of the upcoming Rogers Cup in Montreal because of a lingering knee issue. The eighth-ranked Frenchman has not played since retiring from a second-round Wimbledon match against Ernests Gulbis.

“I am sorry that I won’t be able to play in Montreal,” Tsonga lamented. “I need to continue to rehab my knee that I injured at Wimbledon. I hope to be ready for the U.S. Open at the end of August.”

Countryman Gael Monfils, a recent semifinalist in Umag, followed suit on Thursday. He posted the following on Twitter:


Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal is ready to go for his first appearance since an opening-round Wimbledon loss to Steve Darcis. Nadal is already on site at the Rogers Cup.
