French Open R4 preview and prediction: Etcheverry vs. Nishioka

It will be an entirely unexpected French Open fourth-round showdown when Tomas Martin Etcheverry and Yoshihito Nishioka square off on Monday. Both are unseeded and neither one had ever previously advanced to the fourth round of a slam.

Nishioka has been playing with fire throughout this tournament. The left-hander from Japan has played two five-setters and one four-setter, coming back from two sets down once, two sets to one down on another occasion, and also from a set down in the four-setter. He was let off the hook by J.J. Wolf, Max Purcell, and Thiago Seyboth Wild, but a red-hot Etcheverry is unlikely to be so generous.

Etcheverry has earned 18 of his 22 career main-tour match wins already in 2023 and he has not dropped a single set so far at Roland Garros. The Argentine means business, and he will likely be tougher than Nishioka both physically and mentally in this match.

Pick: Etcheverry in 3
